Rajah Kolambu's domain, Mazaua, was a small but strategically positioned island that acted as a crossroads for maritime travel between the larger islands of Leyte, Mindanao, and Cebu. Kolambu held the title of "Rajah", a term indicating an Indianized influence common among Southeast Asian leaders of the period. This title, while often translated as "king" by European chroniclers, represented a <b>"paramount datu"</b> who commanded the respect and fealty of various sub-leaders within his sphere of influence.

The political structure of Mazaua was built upon the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barangay" class="news-link-ext" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Barangay</a> unit, which typically consisted of 30 to 100 families. As the sovereign, Kolambu's duties were extensive, covering executive, legislative, and judicial functions. He was responsible for maintaining peace, defending his people from invaders, and acting as a judge in local feuds. His authority was not absolute in the European monarchical sense; it depended on his ability to provide for his people and lead them effectively in war and trade.

Rajah Kolambu was part of an elite family network that spanned the central and southern Philippines. He was the brother of <b>Rajah Siagu</b>, the ruler of Butuan and Calagan (Surigao) in Mindanao. This familial link to Butuan is significant because Butuan was a major center for gold mining and maritime commerce, known to have established trade relations with the Chinese <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Song_dynasty" class="news-link-ext" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Song Dynasty</a> as early as 1001 CE.

Additionally, Kolambu was a cousin of <a href="/kauswagan/articles/2894/rajah-humabon-king-of-cebu-in-the-16th-century" class="news_link">Rajah Humabon</a>, the powerful ruler of the Rajahnate of Cebu. These relationships demonstrate the "interconnectivity of the barangay-states", where blood ties served as the foundation for trade monopolies and mutual defense treaties. Kolambu's status as a regional mediator is evidenced by his later role in guiding Magellan to Cebu to meet Humabon.

A prominent local legend provides a possible origin for the name of Kolambu's island, Limasawa. It is said that when Spanish explorers asked for the name of the place, a native misunderstood and thought they were asking about the Rajah's domestic life. He replied "lima'y asawa", meaning "five wives". While this may be a folk etymology, it accurately reflects the social reality of the time. Polygamy was a common practice among the ruling class, used to cement political alliances between different noble families. Each of these marriages would have brought land, warriors, and trade connections to Kolambu's domain, reinforcing his power as a regional leader.

The daily life of Rajah Kolambu and his people was characterized by a high degree of environmental adaptation and cultural refinement. According to the journals of <a href="/kauswagan/articles/2798/antonio-pigafetta-magellans-assistant-and-chronicler" class="news_link">Antonio Pigafetta</a>, the Rajah lived in a "palace" built upon "great timbers" that stood high above the ground. This architectural style, with floors raised 1.5 to 8 meters, was common in the region to avoid seasonal flooding and to provide a defensive vantage point. Access to these dwellings was typically provided by ladders that could be drawn up if necessary.

Ethnographic Observations of the Elite

Pigafetta's descriptions of Rajah Kolambu and his brother Rajah Siagu provide a detailed look at the physical appearance and hygiene of the pre-colonial nobility. The leaders were described as "fragrant" and well-groomed, frequently anointing themselves with coconut and benniseed oil to protect their skin from the sun.

The abundance of gold, as noted by the Spanish, was a result of local mining and sifting processes that produced nuggets the size of walnuts or eggs.

The 1521 Encounter: Diplomatic Gestures and First Contact
</h2>

The arrival of the Spanish fleet in March 1521 was a pivotal moment for Rajah Kolambu. After first reaching the island of <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homonhon" class="news-link-ext" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Homonhon</a>, Magellan's expedition anchored at Mazaua on March 28, 1521. Kolambu's response to the foreign arrival was one of cautious hospitality, a trait that Pigafetta noted as a characteristic of the local people.

<p>
Communication was made possible through <a href="/articles/3330/the-1521-cebu-massacre-collapse-of-the-magellan-expedition" class="news_link">Enrique of Malacca</a>, Magellan's Malay slave, who acted as an interpreter. The ability of Enrique to communicate with Kolambu's people suggests that Old Malay served as the lingua franca for trade and diplomacy in the region.

This barter was more than a simple trade of goods; it was a "test of sincerity". By accepting the Spanish gifts and providing provisions, Kolambu was establishing a peaceful foundation for further negotiation.

The Sandugo: The Blood Compact of Brotherhood

On March 29, 1521, Rajah Kolambu and Ferdinand Magellan performed the Sandugo, or blood compact. This ritual was a sacred tradition used to seal alliances and treaties between different tribes or nations. In the local culture, this was known as casi-casi, a term derived from the root word kasi, meaning "dear" or "friend".

The ritual involved a specific process: both parties would draw blood from an incision in their arms and pour it into a vessel filled with wine. They would then both drink from the vessel, symbolically sharing their blood and obligating each other to act as siblings. For Kolambu, this compact was a serious legal and spiritual commitment that ensured mutual protection and cooperation in trade and war. It was the first recorded international treaty between a Filipino leader and a European power.

The First Catholic Mass and the Erection of the Cross

One of the most historically significant events in Rajah Kolambu's life was his participation in the first documented Catholic Mass in the Philippines. This event took place on Easter Sunday, March 31, 1521, on the shores of Mazaua.

Magellan sent Father <a href="/articles/3331/father-pedro-de-valderrama-first-mass-philippines" class="news_link">Pedro de Valderrama</a> ashore to prepare a makeshift altar. Kolambu and his brother Siagu attended the ceremony along with Magellan's crew. During the elevation of the Host, the Rajahs remained on their knees with their hands clasped in a gesture of reverence. This participation did not necessarily mean they had fully converted to Christianity, but it demonstrated their respect for the religious rituals of their new allies.

The Planting of the Cross
</h3>

Following the Mass, Magellan instructed his men to plant a large wooden cross on the summit of the highest hill overlooking the sea. Kolambu and Siagu accompanied the Spanish to the top of the hill. Magellan explained that the cross would serve as a sign of Spanish protection; any Spanish ship seeing the cross would know that the island was friendly and would not harm its people. For Kolambu, this was a tangible symbol of the security and alliance he had gained through his diplomacy with the foreigners.
