His father, <b>Antonio Vivencio del Rosario</b> (1828–1884), was a distinguished scholar and administrator. Antonio held a doctorate in Civil Law and was the first layperson to serve as the Secretary General of the <a href="/articles/3223/a-historical-account-of-the-university-of-santo-tomas-a-chronicle-of-resilience-scholarship-and-national-identity" class="news_link">University of Santo Tomas</a> (UST). His prominent position within the colony's premier academic institution provided a foundational status that allowed his sons to pursue elite educations in Europe. Mariano's mother was <b>Felipa San Jose</b>. Together, they raised several notable children, including Mariano and his older brother, Salvador, who would become a prominent physician and revolutionary.

However, the Moret Decree of the 1860s forced the Spanish government to modernize the curriculum. In 1871, UST was authorized to establish faculties of medicine, surgery, and pharmacy. These became the first science faculties in the country, marking the beginning of formal scientific training for Filipinos.

Mariano Vivencio del Rosario entered this evolving academic system and earned his Bachelor of Arts (A.B.) degree from the University of Santo Tomas in 1885. During his time at UST, he was exposed to the rigid yet comprehensive training provided by the Dominican Order. While the university offered licentiates, which allowed individuals to practice their professions locally, the higher academic title of "Doctorate" was often restricted or required further study in Spain.

The educational ceiling in the Philippines served as a catalyst for the Ilustrado movement. Ambitious students understood that to reach the pinnacle of their fields, they had to travel to Europe. This journey was made significantly easier by the <a href="/articles/3318/suez-canal-1869-how-it-transformed-the-philippines" class="news_link">opening of the Suez Canal in 1869</a>, which reduced the travel time between Manila and the Spanish peninsula from sixty days to thirty. Following in the footsteps of figures like Jose Rizal and Antonio Luna, Mariano traveled to Spain to pursue his doctorate in pharmacy.

Advanced Studies in Spain and the Propaganda Movement

In Madrid, Mariano enrolled at the Universidad Central de Madrid, the only institution empowered by the Spanish government to grant doctoral degrees in pharmacy and medicine. His time in Spain coincided with a period of intense political activity among the Filipino expatriate community. Along with his peers, he became an active participant in the Propaganda Movement, which sought administrative reforms and equal rights for Filipinos under the Spanish crown.

Mariano was a contributor to La Solidaridad, the movement's political mouthpiece. His academic performance in Spain was exemplary. In 1893, he earned his Doctor of Pharmacy (Phar. D.) from the University of Madrid. He was the second Filipino to receive a doctorate in this field, following closely behind Antonio Luna, who had earned his doctorate in 1893 as well. These two men represented a new breed of Filipino professional: the scientist-patriot.
