It is notable for having been written without a title, signature, or date, suggesting the urgent and secretive conditions under which it was produced. The survival of the text was only made possible through a deliberate plan by Rizal to hide the manuscript inside a domestic object, which his family later recovered. This report examines the historical context of its composition, the technical details of its preservation, a plain-language analysis of its content, and its subsequent influence on international politics.

Historical Context and the Final Hours in Fort Santiago

The composition of the poem occurred during a period of extreme political tension. In 1892, <a href="/kauswagan/articles/735/today-in-philippine-history-july-3-1892-dr-jose-rizal-founded-the-la-liga-filipina" class="news_link">Rizal had founded La Liga Filipina</a>, an organization that sought peaceful reforms under Spanish rule. However, the Spanish government viewed his activities as a threat, leading to his exile in Dapitan for four years. By 1896, a more radical group called the Katipunan had launched an armed revolution. Although Rizal did not lead this uprising and had expressed concerns about its timing, he was arrested and held responsible for the unrest.

Rizal was brought to <a href="/articles/3085/fort-santiago-history-a-testament-to-manilas-rich-past" class="news_link">Fort Santiago</a>, a stone fortress in Manila, to face a court-martial. The trial was swift, and the death sentence was announced on December 29, 1896. During the final 24 hours of his life, Rizal was allowed visitors, primarily his family members and several Jesuit priests. It was during this time that he was believed to have finalized the 14-stanza poem on a small piece of paper, approximately 9.5 by 15 centimeters.

The visitors allowed into his cell were strictly monitored by guards. Any written material found on Rizal's person would likely have been seized and destroyed by the authorities to prevent him from communicating with the revolutionaries. Consequently, Rizal had to find a secure way to pass his final message to his family.

The visit at 4:00 PM was the most critical for the survival of the poem. During this meeting, Rizal's sister Trinidad entered to take their mother out of the cell. At this moment, Rizal whispered to Trinidad in English - a language the guards did not understand - that there was "something inside" the small alcohol stove he had in his room.

The Mechanism of Preservation and Recovery

The object used to hide the poem was an alcohol burner or stove, referred to as a "cocinilla" in Spanish. This stove was a gift from Rizal's friend, <b>Dr. Trinidad H. Pardo de Tavera</b>, and Rizal had used it during his years of travel in Europe and his exile in Dapitan to warm his food. Because it was a common domestic item, it did not immediately draw the suspicion of the prison guards.

Rizal folded the small sheet of paper into four parts and hid it in the fuel tank area at the bottom of the burner. The stove was not given to the family during their visit on December 29 because Rizal needed it to light his room and finish his final tasks. Instead, the guard handed the stove to Narcisa Rizal after the family had left the cell and were about to board their carriage in the courtyard.

After the family returned home, they waited until after the execution on December 30 to search the object. Remembering Rizal's whispered instruction, the sisters examined the burner. They initially found it difficult to see how anything could be hidden inside it, but they eventually discovered a hidden space at the base. Using a hairpin, they managed to pull out the tightly folded paper. The recovery of the poem was a moment of deep emotion for the family, as they realized it was his final goodbye to the nation, his family, and his friends.

The poem is a structured farewell that moves from the author's love for his country to his personal relationships and finally to his views on death. Rizal uses nature and religious imagery to explain his sacrifice.

In the first stanza, Rizal says goodbye to his country, which he calls the "Pearl of the Orient Sea". He describes the Philippines as an "Eden lost", a reference to the suffering of the people under colonial rule. He states that he is giving his life "sad and repressed" to help the country, and he explains that even if his life were better or more beautiful, he would still give it up for the nation's welfare.

The second stanza mentions that many people are dying for the country on the battlefields. Rizal notes that these people do not hesitate or feel pain because they know their cause is important. He explains that it does not matter where a person dies - whether it is on a "scaffold, open field, or in a fight" - as long as it is for the home and the country. He says that even when he was a young boy, his biggest dream was to see the Philippines free from sorrow and shame. He wanted to see the country with "dark eyes dry" and a "smooth brow," meaning a nation that is no longer crying or embarrassed by its situation.

The fifth stanza is a more personal greeting to the country. He calls the Philippines his "ardent, passionate desire" and says "All Hail!" to the soul that is about to leave. He believes that falling or dying is a good thing if it helps the country "acquire fullness" and "expire" under its own sky.

In the sixth stanza, Rizal imagines his grave in the future. He says that if a "simple humble flower" grows in the grass over his tomb, it should be brought to someone's lips. He explains that this flower is like his soul, and by kissing it, the person is showing him tenderness. He wants to feel the "warmth of your breath" even while he is in the "cold tomb".

The seventh stanza describes the environment around his grave. He wants the moon to shine over him, the dawn to send light, and the wind to sigh over the site. He says that if a bird lands on his cross and sings, it should be allowed to sing a "hymn of peace". This shows Rizal's desire for the country to find peace after his death.

The tenth stanza discusses the graveyard at night. He says that when the night is dark and only the dead are there, his rest should not be disturbed. He tells the people that if they hear the sound of a "sad hymn" or a song, it is him singing to the country.

The eleventh stanza contains a request for when his grave is eventually forgotten. He asks that there be no "cross nor a stone" to mark the spot. In the twelfth stanza, he says that "oblivion" or being forgotten does not bother him because he will still be in the air, the space, and the valleys of the Philippines. He will be the color, light, song, and lament that the people see and hear.

The thirteenth stanza is a farewell to the country, where he says he is going to a place "where there are no slaves, hangmen nor oppressors". He describes this place as one where "faith doesn't kill" and God is the only ruler. This is often interpreted as a criticism of the Spanish religious authorities who supported his execution.

Finally, in the fourteenth stanza, he says goodbye to his family, his childhood friends, and his "sweet foreigner".
