The Tondo Origins and Family Environment
</h2>
<p>
Procopio was born in 1873 in the district of <a href="/articles/3255/tondo-manila-from-ancient-kingdom-to-urban-icon" class="news_link">Tondo, Manila</a>, which was then part of the Spanish Empire. Tondo was a crowded area known for its laboring population and its history of resistance to colonial rule. He was the third child in a family of six, born to <b>Santiago Bonifacio</b> and <b>Catalina de Castro</b>. His father, Santiago, was a tailor who had enough standing in the community to serve as a local official, or teniente mayor, while his mother, Catalina, was a worker in a cigarette factory.

<p>
The household was managed with a focus on hard work and basic education. However, the family faced a major crisis when both parents died of illness within a short time of each other in the early 1880s. This left the eldest brother, Andres, to lead the family at just fourteen years old. Procopio and his siblings had to work immediately to survive. They made and sold paper fans and canes, and Procopio later found work as a baggage porter for the Philippine National Railways (PNR).

Professional Life and Early Activism
</h2>
<p>
Working at the Philippine National Railways provided Procopio with a unique perspective on the colonial infrastructure. As a baggage porter, he interacted with a wide range of people and observed the movement of goods and Spanish personnel across the island of Luzon. This experience likely helped him understand the logistical challenges the revolution would later face. His transition from a laborer to a revolutionary was fueled by the same grievances that moved many in Tondo: high taxes, lack of representation, and the heavy-handed nature of the Spanish administration.

When the Katipunan was founded in July 1892, Procopio was one of the first to join. He took the name <b>"Pisaw"</b> as his secret alias within the society. The use of aliases was a standard safety measure borrowed from Freemasonry to protect members from discovery by the Spanish authorities. Procopio's commitment was not just to his brother but to the idea of a free Philippines. He participated in the early recruitment efforts, which used a "triangle system" where one member would recruit two others who did not know each other, ensuring that if one person was caught, the entire network would not be compromised.

<h2>
Expanding the Revolution: The Mindoro Mission
</h2>
<p>
One of Procopio's most significant contributions was his work as an organizer outside of Manila. He was responsible for founding the Katipunan chapter on the island of Mindoro. This was a difficult task that required traveling through Spanish-controlled waters and building trust with local leaders who were far from the political center of Tondo.   
</p>
<p>
While in Mindoro, Procopio was not just a political figure; he also built personal ties. He met a woman named Juana, with whom he had a son named Juan. His ability to establish a revolutionary presence in Mindoro showed that the Katipunan was capable of expanding beyond the Tagalog-speaking heartland. This expansion was vital for the movement, as it forced the Spanish army to divide its forces to handle uprisings in different parts of the archipelago.

<p>
In addition to his work in Mindoro, Procopio was a co-founder of the "Council of the Ancient Assignment" in Kawit, Cavite. He worked alongside Andres Bonifacio, <a href="/articles/3301/emilio-jacinto-brains-of-the-katipunan-biography" class="news_link">Emilio Jacinto</a>, and <a href="/kauswagan/articles/1229/today-in-philippine-history-july-11-1869-pio-valenzuela-was-born-in-polo-bulacan" class="news_link">Pio Valenzuela</a> to create this council, which was intended to handle specific administrative and organizational duties for the society. Within this group, Procopio was known as a leader who helped guide new members into the "light," a term used to describe the moral and political education provided by the Katipunan.

<h2>
The Outbreak of War and Military Service
</h2>
<p>
When the Spanish authorities discovered the Katipunan on <time datetime="1896-08-19">August 19, 1896</time>, the time for secret organizing ended. Procopio was present during the "Cry of Balintawak" (also referred to as the <a href="/articles/3289/cry-of-pugad-lawin-august-23-1896" class="news_link">Cry of Pugad Lawin</a>), where members tore up their cedulas or tax certificates to signal their defiance of Spain.   
</p>
<p>
Procopio was given the rank of colonel in the revolutionary army. He fought in the early battles around Manila, including the <a href="/articles/2973/the-battle-of-san-juan-del-monte-the-dawn-of-the-philippine-revolution-took-place-on-august-30-1896" class="news_link">attack on the San Juan del Monte powder depot</a> on <time datetime="1896-08-30">August 30, 1896</time>. Despite being poorly armed with bolos and a few rifles, the Katipuneros managed to challenge the Spanish forces, though they often suffered heavy casualties due to the superior firepower of the colonial army.

As the fighting moved into the later months of 1896, the focus of the revolution shifted to Cavite, where the rebels had successfully taken control of several towns. In December 1896, Procopio accompanied Andres and their brother Ciriaco to Cavite. They were invited by <a href="/articles/3324/mariano-malia-alvarez-filipino-revolutionary-leader" class="news_link">Mariano Alvarez</a>, the head of the Magdiwang faction, to help resolve the growing conflict between the Magdiwang and the Magdalo factions of the Katipunan.

<h2>
The Cavite Conflict and the Tejeros Convention
</h2>
<p>
The move to Cavite proved to be a turning point for the Bonifacio brothers. Instead of acting as mediators, they found themselves caught in a struggle for leadership. The Magdalo faction, led by the Aguinaldo family, wanted to replace the Katipunan with a new revolutionary government. They felt that the secret society structure was no longer sufficient for managing a full-scale war.

<p>
This tension came to a head at the Tejeros Convention on <time datetime="1897-03-22">March 22, 1897</time>. During the meeting, <a href="/articles/3325/emilio-aguinaldos-life-and-leadership" class="news_link">Emilio Aguinaldo</a> was elected president, while Andres Bonifacio was elected Director of the Interior. When a Magdalo member named <b>Daniel Tirona</b> questioned whether Andres was educated enough for the position, Andres was deeply offended and declared the election results invalid.   
</p>
<p>
Procopio stood by his brother during this crisis. They signed the <b>Acta de Tejeros</b>, a document stating that the convention was disorderly and its decisions were not legitimate. Following the meeting, the Bonifacio brothers and their loyalists prepared to leave Cavite and return to the province of Batangas or Manila to continue the fight on their own terms.

<h2>
The Arrest in Limbon
</h2>
<p>
In April 1897, Emilio Aguinaldo, now acting as the president of the new revolutionary government, ordered the arrest of the Bonifacio brothers. He viewed their refusal to recognize his government as a form of treason that threatened the unity of the revolution. A group of soldiers led by <b>General Agapito Bonzon</b> and General <a href="/kauswagan/articles/666/jose-ignacio-paua-the-philippine-revolution-only-pure-blooded-chinese-general" class="news_link">José Ignacio Paua</a> was sent to capture them at their camp in Barrio Limbon, Indang.   
</p>
<p>
The arrest was violent. Ciriaco Bonifacio was shot and killed during the struggle. Procopio was beaten and taken into custody, while Andres was wounded by a bullet in the arm and a dagger wound to the neck. The brothers were then brought to Naic and eventually to Maragondon to face a military trial.
