Ancestry and Early Life in Polo, Bulacan

Pío Valenzuela was born on <time datetime="1869-07-11">July 11, 1869</time>, in the town of Polo, Bulacan, a location that has since been renamed Valenzuela City in his honor. He was born into an affluent and influential family, which allowed him access to the best education available at the time. His parents were <b>Francisco Valenzuela</b> and <b>Lorenza Alejandrino</b>. Francisco was a prominent figure in local politics, serving as a gobernadorcillo (municipal governor) of Polo, which provided Pío with an early example of administrative leadership within the Spanish colonial framework.

Pío was the third of four children, with siblings Agustina, Severo, and Tomás. The family's wealth meant that their children were not subjected to the immediate economic hardships faced by many of their countrymen, but it also placed them in a position to observe the systemic injustices of Spanish rule from a vantage point of social responsibility. His early education began at home, followed by formal lessons in Latin and Spanish in the town of Quingua (now Plaridel) under the guidance of Telesforo Evangelista in 1880.

In 1884, Valenzuela moved to Manila to attend the <a href="/kauswagan/articles/2884/the-history-of-colegio-de-san-juan-de-letran" class="news_link">Colegio de San Juan de Letran</a> for his secondary education. By 1888, he had enrolled at the <a href="/articles/3223/a-historical-account-of-the-university-of-santo-tomas" class="news_link">University of Santo Tomas</a> to study medicine. It was during his time as a medical student that his political consciousness began to sharpen. As part of his schoolwork, he provided free medical treatment to the poor, witnessing firsthand the physical and emotional toll that colonial tyranny took on the Filipino people. This experience bridged the gap between his privileged upbringing and the suffering of the masses, eventually leading him to join the revolutionary cause.

Entry into the Katipunan and the Rise of the Triumvirate
</h2>

In July 1892, only a week after its founding by <a href="/articles/3326/andres-bonifacio-life-legacy-and-the-first-president" class="news_link">Andrés Bonifacio</a>, Pío Valenzuela joined the <a href="/kauswagan/articles/906/about-the-katipunan" class="news_link">Katipunan</a>, a secret society dedicated to gaining independence from Spain. Despite being only 23 years old and still a student, he quickly became a key figure in the organization due to his education and his sincere commitment to the cause. His medical skills were immediately put to use for the society, and he was eventually elected as the Surgeon General or Physician General of the Katipunan Supreme Council.

Valenzuela's relationship with Andrés Bonifacio was more than just a political partnership; they were close personal friends. Valenzuela even served as the godfather to Bonifacio's first child with Gregoria de Jesús. This bond of trust led to the formation of the "Secret Chamber" of the Katipunan, also known as the Camara Reina or Kamara Negra (Black Chamber). This three-man council, consisting of Bonifacio, <a href="/articles/3301/emilio-jacinto-brains-of-the-katipunan-biography" class="news_link">Emilio Jacinto</a>, and Pío Valenzuela, acted as the highest authority within the organization, handling executive, legislative, and judicial matters.

The Camara Negra functioned as a counter-intelligence unit, passing judgment on members who violated the society's secrets. Valenzuela's role as Fiscal General meant he was responsible for internal discipline and legal affairs within the movement. In late 1895, during the organization's elections, Bonifacio offered to campaign for Valenzuela to become the President of the Supreme Council, but Valenzuela declined, arguing that Bonifacio's leadership was vital for the movement's continuity. This act of humility ensured that the core leadership remained stable as they prepared for the eventual uprising against Spanish forces.

Managing the Revolutionary Press: Ang Kalayaan
</h2>

Historians agree that the most significant achievement of the Katipunan's secret chamber was the publication of Ang Kalayaan (Freedom), the society's official newspaper. Before the paper existed, the Katipunan had only around 300 members after four years of secret activity. Valenzuela suggested the name for the publication and took charge of its management, moving the society's printing press to his rented residence on Lavezares Street in Binondo to better supervise the work.

The production of Ang Kalayaan was a masterclass in deception and logistics. To avoid suspicion from Spanish authorities, the group claimed the paper was edited by <a href="/kauswagan/articles/554/today-in-philippine-history-august-30-1850-marcelo-h-del-pilar-was-born-in-cupang-bulacan-bulacan" class="news_link">Marcelo H. del Pilar</a> and published in Yokohama, Japan. They lacked sufficient typeface, so Valenzuela and Jacinto obtained types stolen from the Diario de Manila press, paying a peso for each type to employees who smuggled them out. The process was slow; it took two months to set and print the eight pages of the first issue because they only had enough letters to set one page at a time.

The first issue was dated January 18, 1896, but it was not widely circulated until March. The impact was immediate and massive. By using the Tagalog language instead of Spanish, the paper reached the common people in a way that intellectual journals like La Solidaridad never could. Within months, the membership of the Katipunan jumped from 300 to an estimated 30,000. This surge in support gave the organization the confidence to move forward with plans for a full-scale revolution.

The Strategic Mission to Dapitan
</h2>
<p>
By May 1896, the Katipunan was preparing for an armed struggle. During a general meeting in Pasig, the members decided to solicit funds for the purchase of weapons from Japan. However, the assembly insisted that they must first consult Dr. <a href="/kauswagan/articles/1190/today-in-philippine-history-june-19-1861-dr-jose-p-rizal-was-born-in-calamba-laguna" class="news_link">José Rizal</a>, who was living in exile in Dapitan. Because Valenzuela was highly educated and a fellow doctor, he was chosen as the emissary to meet with Rizal.   
</p>
<p>
On June 15, 1896, Valenzuela departed Manila on the steamer Venus. To disguise the true purpose of his visit, he brought with him a blind man named Raymundo Mata and a companion named Rufino Magos, pretending that they were seeking Rizal's expert medical advice for Mata's condition. During the trip, Valenzuela used the alias <b>"Procopio Bonifacio"</b> - the name of Andres Bonifacio's brother who was known to regularly use these vessels made the registration on the passenger list less likely to be questioned by the ticketing agents or Spanish inspectors -  to further hide his identity from Spanish agents.
