De la Rosa won the scholarship in April 1898, a moment that should have been the pinnacle of his early career. This frustration of his academic ambitions did not deter his productivity; instead, it grounded him in the Philippines during the early years of the American regime, allowing him to document the changing social landscape of Manila.

On January 13, 1900, de la Rosa married Gorgonia Tolentino. The timing of their marriage at the very start of the twentieth century symbolizes de la Rosa's personal transition into a new era. Although the couple remained childless, their home became a central hub for artistic mentorship when they welcomed their orphaned nephews, Pablo and Fernando Amorsolo, in 1903. De la Rosa's role as a mentor to the Amorsolo brothers is one of his most significant contributions to Philippine art history, as he provided the foundational training for the man who would eventually become the Philippines' most famous national artist.

One of the most significant events of this period was the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition, held in St. Louis, Missouri. De la Rosa's participation in the St. Louis Exposition was a watershed moment for his career and for the international standing of Philippine art. He submitted several works, including the large-scale historical canvas The Death of General Lawton and the rural scene Transplanting Rice (also known as Planting Rice). The Death of General Lawton depicted the fall of the highest-ranking American officer during the Philippine-American War, a commission arranged by his patron, Williams. The painting was awarded a bronze prize, demonstrating de la Rosa's skill in handling complex, dynamic historical compositions.

However, it was Transplanting Rice that captured the greatest public and critical attention, earning de la Rosa the gold medal. This painting, an oil on canvas measuring 109.2 x 190.6 cm, depicted Filipino laborers in a sun-drenched field. The gold medal at St. Louis established de la Rosa as a world-class artist and remains one of the most celebrated achievements in the history of Filipino painting.
