Hideyoshi's letter was not a proposal for mutual friendship but a demand for submission. Cobo carried a reply that carefully avoided the question of vassalage while emphasizing a desire for "friendship" and trade. He also brought impressive gifts, including an elephant, which was intended to amuse the Taikō and demonstrate the exotic reach of the Spanish Empire. Hideyoshi, reportedly impressed by Cobo's intellect and the "warlike" nature of the Spanish nation, gave the embassy a magnificent reception and momentarily suspended his invasion plans.

The success of the mission was ultimately clouded by tragedy. On his return journey to Manila, Juan Cobo's ship was wrecked off the coast of Formosa (Taiwan), and he was killed by the local inhabitants.
