Prior to this era, the socio-political landscape of the Cotabato Valley and surrounding regions was characterized by fragmented, animist, and Hindu-influenced polities. These communities operated as localized chieftainships or datuships without a centralized state apparatus.   
</p>
<p>
The migration of Kabungsuwan from the Malay Peninsula to Mindanao was not an isolated event, but rather a direct consequence of broader geopolitical shifts in the region. In 1511, the strategic port of Malacca fell to Portuguese colonial forces, disrupting trade networks and forcing the Malacca royal family to flee south to establish a new capital in Johor. Kabungsuwan's subsequent departure from Johor and his journey eastward were part of a larger wave of Malay migration and Islamic propagation driven by these regional pressures. By establishing the Sultanate of Maguindanao, Kabungsuwan introduced a standardized code of law, a centralized administrative structure, and a global religious identity that reshaped the geopolitics of the southern Philippines. This transformation enabled the region to resist Spanish conquest for nearly four centuries.

<h2>
Lineage and the Trans-Maritime Hadhrami-Malay Connection
</h2>
<p>
The genealogical records of Mindanao, known as tarsilas, document Kabungsuwan's lineage as a synthesis of sacred Arab ancestry and Malay royal power. These records trace his paternal descent to the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ba_%27Alawiyya" class="news-link-ext" target="_blank" rel="norferrer noopener">Ba 'Alawiyya</a> clan of Hadhramaut, Yemen, through Sayyid Zainal Abidin Al-Aydarus, also referred to as Tun Dagang. His father, an Arab sharif - a direct descendant of the <b>Prophet Muhammad</b> through his grandson Hassan - settled in Johor. There, he married Potri Diosol Asikin (also recorded as Jūsul Asiqīn), a princess of the royal family descended from <b>Sultan Iskandar Zhulkarnain</b>, the foundational ruler of the Malacca Sultanate.

<p>
This dual lineage provided Kabungsuwan with both religious legitimacy and political authority:

<p>
In Maguindanao tradition, the name "Kabungsuwan" means "youngest", indicating his position as the youngest of three brothers. According to regional narratives, his eldest brother, Ahmad, established the Bruneian Sultanate, while his second brother, Alawi, founded the Sulu Sultanate. While historically simplified, this sibling cohort narrative served to historically and symbolically align the major Islamic states of the region under a single family.

The Journey and Strategic Landing at Malabang
</h2>
<p>
Kabungsuwan's journey to Mindanao was initiated by regional conflicts following the fall of Malacca. Setting sail from Johor with a substantial fleet, his expedition encountered a severe storm that dispersed his ships across various ports in the region. Kabungsuwan and his immediate followers ultimately arrived on the southern coast of Mindanao. Traditional accounts note that his forces were composed of Samals - skilled sea nomads of the Malay Archipelago who provided the naval and military support necessary to secure his presence in the region.

<p>
Kabungsuwan first landed at T'buk, the historical name for Malabang, in modern-day Lanao del Sur. Here, he established a trading post and began preaching Sunni Islam to the local Iranun and Maranao populations. During this early period, Kabungsuwan enforced strict religious standards; historical accounts indicate that he exiled members of his group who apostatized or deviated from Islamic practices, sending them downstream to the Cotabato area to preserve the orthodoxy of his core settlement.   
</p>
<p>
At Malabang, Kabungsuwan secured his first major political alliance by marrying into the local ruling class. He married the daughter of Tomoai Aliwya, the leader of the Maguindanao Family Dynasty. Following his father-in-law's death, secular authority over the region was transferred to Kabungsuwan, who assumed leadership under the title of "Sultan Aliwya," marking the formal establishment of his administrative rule over the coastal settlements.

Conflict, Alliance, and the Dual Social Order of the Cotabato Valley
</h2>
<p>
After consolidating his position along the coast, Kabungsuwan directed his fleet toward the mouth of the Pulangi River (the Rio Grande de Mindanao), the primary agricultural and trade artery of the island's interior. Upon entering the river basin, he encountered a series of independent pagan settlements, including Slangan, Maguindanao proper, Lusud, Matampay, Tagiman, and Katitwan.

The Battle of Tinundan and Initial Resistance
</h3>
<p>
The settlements of Slangan and Katitwan mobilized their forces to resist Kabungsuwan's advance up the river, attempting to block his progress at a site named Tinundan. This clash highlighted a significant technological imbalance: the local defenders, equipped with wooden arrows and light shields, were defeated by Kabungsuwan's disciplined, sword-bearing Samal forces, who may have also utilized early gunpowder weapons. Following their defeat, the hostile native forces retreated further inland.

The Submission of Maguindanao Proper
</h3>
<p>
In contrast to the resistance of Slangan, the leaders of Maguindanao proper - the brothers and datus Tabunaway and Mamalu - opted for a peaceful alliance. They welcomed Kabungsuwan and accepted his political and religious leadership. To formalize this alliance, the people of Maguindanao proper submitted to mass circumcision and ritual washing, which served as their formal conversion to Islam.

<p>
The geography of the Pulangi River basin preserves several sites associated with these events:

<b>Katuri:</b> A small settlement directly opposite modern Cotabato City, which served as the site for the mass circumcision ceremony.

<h3 class="my-h3">
The Parting of Tabunaway and Mamalu
</h3>
<p>
The introduction of Islam by Kabungsuwan led to a permanent division among the indigenous populations of the Cotabato Valley. This division is represented in oral history by the parting of the brothers Tabunaway and Mamalu. While Tabunaway embraced the new faith and remained in the fertile lowlands, Mamalu chose to preserve their ancestral animist beliefs and retreated to the mountains.   
</p>
<p>
Despite their religious differences, the brothers established an unwritten non-aggression and mutual trade pact. This agreement defined relations between the lowland Muslim Maguindanaons and the highland animist Teduray (Tiruray) for generations. Those who accepted the new faith remained in the lowlands, while those who maintained their ancestral beliefs but honored the kinship pact settled in the nearby hills, becoming the Teduray. Groups that completely rejected the new system and fled deep into the distant mountains to maintain their independence became the ancestors of the modern Manobo.

<h2>
Strategic Dynastic Alliances: Wives, Offspring, and the Barabangsa
</h2>
<p>
To legitimize his rule and integrate his descendants into the local power structure, Kabungsuwan married several daughters of prominent local chieftains. These marriages established the barabangsa, a noble class that claimed sacred descent from the Prophet Muhammad through Kabungsuwan, alongside local ancestral rights.   
</p>
<p>
To preserve the status of this ruling class, traditional narratives utilized supernatural elements to elevate the maternal lineages of Kabungsuwan's wives, distinguishing them from the general population. The most notable of these legends is that of Putri Tunina (also recorded as Potri Tomanina), who was said to have been found as an infant inside a stalk of bamboo by Tabunaway and Mamalu. Similarly, the wife of Kabungsuwan's son, Saripada Maka-alang, was said to have emerged from a crow's egg. These myths of supernatural birth elevated the status of the female descent lines, ensuring that the barabangsa class was recognized as distinct and sacred.   
</p>
<p>
Kabungsuwan's marriages were politically strategic, designed to build alliances across different geographical regions of Mindanao.

Socio-Political Structuring and Constitutional Settlement: The Dumatus
</h2>

The transition from independent datuships to a centralized sultanate was achieved through a negotiated constitutional settlement between Kabungsuwan and the indigenous leaders. This compromise is visible in the unique political and social concessions granted to the descendants of Tabunaway, who became known as the dumatus.   
</p>
<p>
When Tabunaway surrendered his secular authority to Kabungsuwan, he secured permanent hereditary rights for his descendants. The dumatus maintained their own distinct genealogical records to preserve these privileges. Notably, theirs is the only tarsila in Cotabato that does not trace its descent back to Kabungsuwan.   
</p>
<p>
The dumatu covenant established two core privileges:

<b>Tribute Exemption:</b> Unlike the commoners (endatuan), who were obligated to pay tribute in rice and labor to the datus, the dumatus were exempt from all forms of tribute.

<li>
<b>Enthronement Veto Power:</b> No descendant of Kabungsuwan could be officially proclaimed as Sultan of Maguindanao without the active participation, presence, and consent of a representative of the dumatus. If a sultan was enthroned without their consent, the dumatus held the legal authority to void the proclamation and temporarily assume direct leadership of the state.

<p>
This structural balance of power established a constitutional check on the executive authority of the Sultan. It ensured that while the barabangsa held the exclusive right to rule, their power remained anchored to the original lineage of the valley.

<p>
Following the consolidation of the Sultanate, a highly rigid, four-tiered social hierarchy emerged in the Cotabato Valley, combining Islamic concepts of status with indigenous Southeast Asian social organization :
