His life was defined by active public service in the Spanish colonial government, political arrest, a dramatic escape from exile, and decades of legal and promotional work from his home in London. A key part of his political career was his close, yet complex, partnership with the Philippine national hero, <a href="/kauswagan/articles/1190/today-in-philippine-history-june-19-1861-dr-jose-p-rizal-was-born-in-calamba-laguna" class="news_link">Dr. José Rizal</a>.

Early life, education, and government service in Manila
</h2>

Regidor was born in Manila on April 16, 1845. He was the son of a Spanish couple, Don Antonio María Regidor y Madrigal and Doña María del Rosario Jurado y Vergara. He attended primary and secondary school at the <a href="/kauswagan/articles/2884/the-history-of-colegio-de-san-juan-de-letran" class="news_link">Colegio de San Juan de Letran</a> and went on to complete a Bachelor of Philosophy at the <a href="/articles/3223/a-historical-account-of-the-university-of-santo-tomas" class="news_link">University of Santo Tomas</a> in 1863. To further his education, he traveled to Spain and earned a Doctor of Civil and Canon Laws from the Universidad Central de Madrid. 


Upon returning to the Philippines in 1868, Regidor took several legal and administrative jobs within the Spanish colonial government. He served as Secretary to the Provincial Audiencia, Fiscal of the Artillery and Engineering Corps, and Chief Inspector of Municipal Schools. In his role as Chief Inspector, he drafted and secured a royal decree that allowed native Filipinos of any social status to enroll in public schools. This reform was a major step forward, as it opened the doors of education to poorer Filipinos who were previously kept out of the school system. In 1871, he joined the law faculty at the University of Santo Tomas. He also became a vocal supporter of the secularization movement, which was led by native priests Father <a href="/kauswagan/articles/923/today-in-philippine-history-february-9-1837-father-jose-burgos-was-born-in-vigan-ilocos-sur" class="news_link">José Burgos</a> and Father <a href="/kauswagan/articles/1709/dr-pedro-pablo-pelaez-champion-of-filipino-clergy-the-first-truly-national-leader" class="news_link">Pedro Pelaez</a> to allow Filipino priests to run local parishes instead of Spanish friars.

The Cavite Mutiny, exile, and the escape from Guam
</h2>

The political environment in Manila changed overnight in January 1872 due to the <a href="/articles/3310/the-1872-cavite-mutiny-and-gomburza-martyrdom" class="news_link">Cavite Mutiny</a>. Led by Sergeant Fernando La Madrid, a small group of Filipino soldiers and workers rebelled when the colonial government removed their tax and forced labor exemptions. Although Spanish troops easily crushed the revolt, Governor-General <a href="/kauswagan/articles/2429/today-in-philippine-history-september-30-1820-governor-general-rafael-izquierdo-was-born-in-santander-spain" class="news_link">Rafael Izquierdo</a> used the event as an excuse to target Filipino liberals, lawyers, and reformist priests. While Father Jose Burgos, Father <a href="/kauswagan/articles/1256/today-in-philippine-history-august-2-1799-father-mariano-gomez-was-born-in-sta-cruz-manila" class="news_link">Mariano Gomez</a>, and Father <a href="/kauswagan/articles/485/today-in-philippine-history-august-14-1835-jacinto-zamora-was-born-in-pandacan-manila" class="news_link">Jacinto Zamora</a> were executed, many reformists were arrested. Regidor, who was known to sympathize with the native clergy, was arrested on false charges and sentenced to eight years of exile in the Marianas Islands.

Regidor refused to serve his sentence quietly. In 1874, he planned a daring escape from <a href="/articles/3118/guams-history-and-deep-ties-to-the-philippines-and-filipinos" class="news_link">Guam</a> by putting on the disguise of a Catholic priest. He waited until the guards and townspeople of Agana were distracted by the evening Angelus prayer and slipped onto a North American merchant ship named the Rupax. Once at sea, he sailed to the Yap Islands, where he transferred to another boat called the Islander bound for Palau and the Solomon Islands. Bad weather forced his vessel to stop at Malaku Island, but he eventually boarded a British schooner named the Cochrane, which took him to Hong Kong. From there, he sailed to Marseilles, France. In April 1876, Regidor met with the Spanish Consul in Paris and received an official pardon, which allowed him to live as a free man in Europe.

The London base, family life, and patriotic naming
</h2>

After receiving his pardon, Regidor settled in London, England, where he established a successful law practice. His law office became a central meeting place for Filipino students, travelers, and reformists visiting Europe. In London, he married Julia Stanton and raised a large family of ten children, consisting of three sons and seven daughters. 


Despite living in the Hackney district of London for many years and being far from the Philippines, Regidor remained deeply patriotic. This love for his homeland was clearly shown in the names he gave his children. Alongside traditional names like Antonio, Cristobal, and Francisca, he named two of his daughters Manila Regidor Stanton and Visayas Regidor Stanton. This choice of names served as a constant, public reminder of his roots and his political dedication to the different regions of his native country.

Ideological partnership and literary defense of Rizal
</h2>

Regidor was a major supporter of the Propaganda Movement and often wrote articles for its newspaper, La Solidaridad. He advocated for reforms such as equal rights under the law for both Spaniards and Filipinos, the separation of church and state, free education, and the replacement of abusive Spanish friars with native priests. These shared political beliefs created a strong bond between Regidor and José Rizal. 


When Rizal published his first novel, <a href="/articles/3266/jose-rizals-noli-me-tangere-a-novel-that-awakened-a-nation" class="news_link">Noli Me Tangere</a>, in Berlin in 1887, he sent one of the very first copies to Regidor. Regidor read the book immediately and wrote a warm letter to Rizal on May 3, 1887, to congratulate him on his work. In this letter, Regidor praised the novel and focused on the character of María Clara. He explained that María Clara was a realistic depiction of the many innocent women in the Philippines who became victims of the corrupt colonial and religious system. 


Regidor also became a public defender of the novel when Spanish officials and friars tried to ban it. The prior of Guadalupe, Father José Rodriguez, wrote pamphlets claiming that reading Rizal's book was a sin, and other critics attacked Rizal in the Spanish Senate. Regidor publicly defended the book, explaining that Rizal was not attacking the Catholic religion itself, but was instead pointing out the bad behavior of corrupt government officials and greedy Spanish friars.

The London residence and the Morga historical project
</h2>

In May 1888, Rizal arrived in London to study historical documents at the British Museum. His goal was to find accounts of early Philippine history written before Spanish colonization to prove that Filipinos had a rich culture of their own. When Rizal first arrived in the city, he stayed at Regidor's house as a guest. Regidor welcomed him warmly and used his personal connections to help Rizal get access to the British Museum's rare collections.
