After graduating, San Miguel was unable to find agricultural work in Manila. To make a living, he worked as a tailor before securing a position as an estate inspector. He was employed at a large hacienda owned by Pedro Roxas in Nasugbu, Batangas. During his employment in Batangas, San Miguel met Maria Ongcapin, the daughter of a wealthy Chinese merchant named Ong Capin. The couple became engaged and planned to marry, but their wedding was delayed by the outbreak of the Philippine Revolution in August 1896.

Role in the Philippine Revolution against Spain
</h2>

San Miguel joined the <a href="/kauswagan/articles/906/about-the-katipunan" class="news_link">Katipunan</a> in August 1896, a secret society dedicated to overthrowing Spanish rule in the Philippines. When the revolutionary group split into two competing factions in late 1896, San Miguel aligned himself with the Magdiwang faction, which remained loyal to the society's founder, <a href="/articles/3326/andres-bonifacio-life-legacy-and-the-first-president" class="news_link">Andres Bonifacio</a>. Following the <a href="/kauswagan/articles/1258/the-tejeros-convention-according-to-general-artemio-ricarte" class="news_link">Tejeros Convention</a>, where the Magdiwang and Magdalo factions merged, San Miguel rose to the rank of colonel. He commanded revolutionary forces in Nasugbu and Cavite.

<p>
In Nasugbu, San Miguel led a unit of rebel troops to garrison and defend the town against Spanish forces commanded by Colonel Rosas. The Spanish forces defeated the garrison and carried out a massacre of the town's civilian population, leaving only San Miguel and a small number of his soldiers as survivors. Following this defeat, San Miguel joined Generals <a href="/articles/3307/general-artemio-ricarte-father-of-the-philippine-army" class="news_link">Artemio Ricarte</a> and <a href="/articles/3325/emilio-aguinaldos-life-and-leadership" class="news_link">Emilio Aguinaldo</a> in Imus, Cavite, on <time datetime="1897-03-25">March 25, 1897</time>, to plan a counter-attack. This planned assault did not occur because Spanish forces captured the town and advanced toward Cavite Viejo and San Francisco de Malabon.

<p>
On <time datetime="1897-03-26">March 26, 1897</time>, San Miguel led his men in an assault on Spanish troops coming from Barrio Bacao in San Francisco de Malabon. He fought alongside Andres Bonifacio, Colonels Antonio Virata and Esteban San Juan, and Major Julian Montalan. He also participated in the Battle of Alapan in May 1898, which helped establish initial Filipino control over Cavite province.

<p>
After Emilio Aguinaldo returned from exile in Hong Kong, San Miguel reported for duty on May 20, 1898. Aguinaldo gave him command of the northern provinces, which included Nueva Ecija, Tarlac, Pampanga, Bulacan, Morong, Batangas, Laguna, and Manila. When Aguinaldo proclaimed Philippine independence in June 1898, San Miguel was appointed as the talibang pandangal (guard of honor). His loyal followers began calling him "general," though his official promotion to brigadier general occurred later during the conflict with the United States. He was also appointed as the political representative of Negros Oriental in the Malolos Congress.

The Philippine-American War and Conventional Campaigns

The <a href="/kauswagan/articles/913/today-in-philippine-history-february-4-1899-marked-the-start-of-the-filipino-american-war" class="news_link">outbreak of the Philippine-American War</a> on <time datetime="1899-02-04">February 4, 1899</time>, forced San Miguel back into active field command. During the Battle of Manila on February 4–5, 1899, San Miguel served as a colonel commanding forces under General Pio del Pilar's brigade in the Second Zone of Manila's defenses, with his right flank resting on the Pasig River. On the night the war began, San Miguel and General Artemio Ricarte were away in Malolos meeting with President Aguinaldo, leaving their forces without direct senior command. The initial firing started near San Miguel's sector after American General <a href="/articles/3154/the-life-of-major-general-arthur-macarthur-jr-a-focus-on-his-philippine-campaigns" class="news_link">Arthur MacArthur</a> protested the presence of San Miguel's soldiers in a nearby barrio.

As the American army pushed northward out of Manila, San Miguel played a central role in defending the strategic town of Angeles, Pampanga, in August 1899. He commanded the main brigade defending the railroad and wagon roads leading into Angeles from San Fernando. His forces, numbering between 1,500 and 2,500 men, were supported on the flanks by the brigades of Generals <a href="/articles/3305/general-tomas-mascardo-revolutionary-general-governor" class="news_link">Tomas Mascardo</a> and Francisco Aquino. Because Angeles lacked strong natural barriers, San Miguel established forward bases in the railroad villages of Sindalan and Calulut.
