While sheltering, these maritime travelers discovered a natural, large wellspring that produced fresh, sweet potable water. This resource became a regular stopover for sea travelers to replenish their provisions, eventually leading to a permanent settlement around the wellspring. The settlers, drawing from their Bicolano linguistic roots, termed the freshwater well "Bobon", which became the name of the settlement and the river that divides the low-lying coastal land. This geological feature remains central to the town's identity, as the bottom of the Sag-od River, extending to the Mama Maria River, sits on thick coral reef structures that naturally filter and sweeten the groundwater.

With the arrival of Roman Catholic missionaries, a formal local government was established, and a stone church was constructed in the northwestern part of the settlement. This church, designed as a fortress church, served as both a place of worship and a defensive sanctuary for the local population during Moro raids. The rock foundations of this structure were laid by the Jesuits, but the actual church building, the adjoining convent, and the thick defensive walls were completed by Franciscan missionaries in 1842 after the <a href="/articles/3227/how-europes-jesuit-suppression-sparked-colonial-upheaval-in-the-philippines" class="news_link">Jesuit expulsion from the Philippines</a>. The community was presented with a choice between two representations of the Christ Child: a "white" Santo Niño (historically associated with the Santo Niño de Praga or the Holy Infant of Prague) and a "black" Santo Niño (resembling the dark-skinned Santo Niño de Cebu). The townspeople chose the black image, establishing a unique local connection to this specific icon. The local population named the image <b>"Agta"</b>, a regional term used to describe a dark-skinned person, commonly understood as <b>"Pili"</b> or black-skinned.

This selection resulted in a dual liturgical cycle unique to Bobon, which is the only municipality in Northern Samar to celebrate the feast of the Santo Niño twice a year. The naming of the dark-skinned Christ Child as "Agta" represents a significant syncretic connection between pre-colonial animist beliefs and Christian iconography. In Eastern Visayan (Waray) folklore, the "Agta" is a mythical, dark-skinned giant of the forests and coastal areas, known for its physical strength and complex relationship with humans. Traditional beliefs depict these beings as environmental protectors who warn fishermen of approaching storms and block them from sailing during dangerous weather by felling trees across coastal paths.

By applying the term "Agta" to the Black Santo Niño, the inhabitants of Bobon transferred these protective, storm-warning, and coastal guardian qualities onto the Christian icon. This syncretism transformed the European Catholic image into a localized protector of the coastal environment, believed to shield the town from the destructive typhoons that regularly emerge from the Pacific.

The procession is accompanied by motorized balsa boat races, adding a competitive element to the religious event. During the 1980 celebration, under the leadership of the Escober family as the festival sponsors (Hermanos), an educator from Aklan introduced performance elements inspired by the Panay Ati-atihan. This introduction led to the development of a synchronized tribal dance competition, transforming the local event into a major cultural and tourism phenomenon within Northern Samar. The festival was officially named the Bobon Agta Festival during the sponsorship of the school batch of <b>Dr. Jaime Sanico</b>, and it is now recognized as an intangible cultural heritage of the town.
