In his travelogue, <b>Shams al-Din Abu 'Abdallah Muhammad ibn 'Abdallah ibn Muhammad ibn Ibrahim ibn Muhammad ibn Yusuf Lawati al-Tanji ibn Battuta</b> (or simply Ibn Battuta) recorded a voyage from the Samudera Pasai Sultanate in Sumatra toward Yuan-ruled China. He claimed to have stopped at the vast maritime Kingdom of Tawalisi, ruled by a monarch of the same name who was a powerful rival to the Emperor of China.

According to the Rihla, the province of Kaylukari within this realm was governed by the king's daughter, Princess Urduja. Ibn Battuta described her as a multilingual military commander who led an elite army of male and female warriors known as the Kinalakihan or Kalakian.

The text details her hosting a banquet for the ship's crew, addressing Ibn Battuta in Arabic, and expressing an ambition to launch a military expedition against India, the "Pepper Country". She was also noted for her vow to marry only the man who could defeat her in a personal duel, a challenge that left her unmarried as suitors feared the public shame of defeat.

The Account of Friar Odoric of Pordenone (c. 1324)

Twenty years prior to Ibn Battuta's purported voyage, the Italian Franciscan missionary Odoric Mattiussi of Pordenone traveled extensively throughout Asia. His journals describe a wealthy land called Thalamasin (or Panten), located near the "South Sea" along the route between Java and Champa (modern-day southern Vietnam).

Odoric described a land rich in trees that produced flour, wine, and poison, where the local male population utilized blowpipes in warfare and inserted protective metal amulets beneath their skin to render themselves invulnerable to iron weapons.

Crucially, local ecclesiastical and civil histories in the Philippines claim that while seeking refuge from a typhoon in 1324, Friar Odoric landed on the shores of Bolinao, Pangasinan, where he allegedly celebrated the first Catholic Christmas Mass in the archipelago, planted a Christmas tree, and baptized the local population. This narrative is officially commemorated by a historical plaque on the exterior wall of the Church of St. James the Great in Bolinao.

The colonial administration, through photographs and archival records, constructed a discourse depicting native Philippine women as highly adaptable to Western civilization, yet simultaneously "oppressed" by their own traditional culture and needing rescue by the American educational system.

By highlighting figures like Princess Urduja as historical facts, American colonial scholars like Austin Craig sought to demonstrate that the Philippines had a native capacity for civilization and leadership that made them easily assimilable into a modern, democratic, and Westernized framework.
