His academic promise was recognized early in 1936 when he secured a three-year scholarship to the Episcopalian-affiliated Cranbrook School in Michigan. It was during this period that his intellectual curiosity turned toward history and material culture, manifesting as a keen interest in pursuing a career as an archaeologist.

By 1953, Scott had affiliated with the Protestant Episcopal Church as a lay missionary, initially engaging in domestic missionary activities before seeking an overseas assignment. Although his primary desire was to teach in Japan until geopolitical conditions allowed a return to China, the Episcopal Church's deep institutional establishment in the Cordillera mountain region of Northern Luzon drew him to the Philippines. He maintained that the reconstruction of early societies must rely on a rigorous cross-verification of eyewitness accounts written in original languages - including Tagalog, Visayan, and Spanish - supplemented by systematic comparative ethnography. This methodology challenged both the Eurocentric colonial narrative, which relegated the pre-colonial archipelago to a state of ahistorical barbarism, and the uncritical nationalist narratives that relied on uncorroborated oral legends elevated to mythic status.

Through this dual-pronged methodological approach, Scott produced works that transformed the study of both Cordilleran history and broader lowland pre-colonial society. In The Discovery of the Igorots: Spanish Contacts with the Pagans of Northern Luzon (1974), he synthesized eighteen years of archival and ethnographic work to demonstrate how the mountain communities of the Cordillera Central resisted Spanish subjugation for three centuries, maintaining their independence through organized military resistance and economic self-sufficiency. Conversely, his posthumous masterpiece, Barangay: Sixteenth-Century Philippine Culture and Society (1994), meticulously extracted ethnographic data from early Spanish dictionaries (vocabularies) and administrative accounts to map the diverse political organizations, technological achievements, trade networks, and social stratification of the archipelago's various ethnic groups immediately prior to Spanish consolidation.

Unmasking Datu Kalantiaw: The Critical Deconstruction

Scott's most famous contribution to the deconstruction of historical myths was his systematic exposure of the <a href="/kauswagan/articles/6/the-kalantiaw-code" class="news_link">Code of Kalantiaw</a> as a modern forgery. Promulgated in textbooks as a 15th-century penal code written in 1433 by a powerful Panay chieftain named Datu Kalantiaw, the document detailed seventeen articles prescribing brutal punishments - such as boiling offenders alive, drowning, or burying them up to the neck in sand - for minor social infractions. The code had been integrated into the national historical consciousness since the early American colonial period, serving as a cornerstone of pre-colonial legal history and legal education.

The critical investigation was initiated in 1965 when Scott, then a doctoral candidate at the <a href=/articles/3223/a-historical-account-of-the-university-of-santo-tomas" class="news_link">University of Santo Tomas</a>, consulted the eminent bibliographer Mauro Garcia.
