Early Life, Education, and Artistic Beginnings
</h2>
<p>
Locsin was born on <time datetime="1928-08-15">August 15, 1928</time>, in Silay City, Negros Occidental. He was the eldest of seven children born to Guillermo Unson Locsin and Remedios de la Rama Valencia. His family was part of a prominent group of landowners and intellectuals in the sugar industry. His paternal grandfather, Don Leandro Locsin y de la Rama, was a lawyer and served as the first elected governor of Negros Occidental.

When he was four months old, Locsin went to live with his grandparents in Silay. Their home had a large library and an extensive collection of classical music records, which exposed him to arts and music at a young age. He completed his elementary education at De La Salle College in Manila before the outbreak of the Second World War forced his family to return to Negros. After the war, he returned to Manila, finished his high school education at La Salle in 1947, and briefly studied Pre-Law.

Locsin then transferred to the <a href="/articles/3223/a-historical-account-of-the-university-of-santo-tomas" class="news_link">University of Santo Tomas</a> (UST) to study music, earning an Associate in Arts degree with a major in piano. He was a talented pianist and considered a career as a concert performer. However, just a year before graduation, he shifted his focus to architecture and graduated from UST with a Bachelor of Science in Architecture in 1953. During his time at UST, Locsin also practiced painting and was mentored by <a href="/kauswagan/articles/841/today-in-philippine-history-december-23-1895-victorio-edades-was-born-in-dagupan-pangasinan" class="news_link">Victorio Edades</a>, a leading figure in modern Philippine art. Edades introduced Locsin to modernism, which helped shape his design perspective.

Early Career and Major Design Influences
</h2>
<p>
After graduating in 1953, Locsin took on informal apprenticeships. He worked as an artist-draftsman at Ayala and Company under the recommendation of <b>Fernando Zóbel</b>, helping with the master plan for the developing district of Makati. During this period, he also designed stage sets for theatrical and ballet performances, including productions for modern dance pioneer Martha Graham.   
</p>
<p>
In 1955, Locsin established his own architecture firm, which later became known as Leandro V. Locsin Partners. During a trip to the United States, he met prominent modern architects Eero Saarinen and Paul Rudolph. These meetings influenced him to use concrete as his primary building material. He realized that concrete was cheap, easily available, and highly adaptable for construction in the Philippines.

Core Design Concepts and Materials
</h2>
<p>
Locsin developed a simple, clean style that relied on structural honesty and the adaptation of traditional regional building forms. Instead of using complex or flowery language to describe his designs, his work is best understood through a few practical methods.   
</p>

The Floating Volume
</h3>
<p>
Locsin was skilled at making heavy concrete structures look light, as if they were hovering above the ground. He achieved this through three specific design choices:

Recessed Ground Floors: By setting the ground floor walls back from the outer columns, he detached the main bulk of the building from the ground. This design drew inspiration from the silong, the open space beneath a traditional stilted bahay kubo.   
</p>
<p>
Massive Cantilevers: He extended the upper concrete floors far past the support columns, pushing the structural limits of the material.   
</p>
<p>
Deep-Set Windows: Instead of using flat glass walls, he recessed windows deep into the concrete structure. This created dark, heavy shadows that emphasized the shape of the building and made the upper concrete volumes look separate from the base.

Raw Concrete Finishes
</h3>
<p>
Unlike conventional modern buildings that used painted plaster, Locsin kept concrete surfaces raw and textured. His firm achieved this "Locsin texture" by using rough-sawn lumber or untreated plywood for the concrete molds. As the concrete dried, the texture and grain of the wood transferred directly onto the building’s walls. He used local aggregates in the concrete mix to ensure natural coloring and applied a clear matte sealer to protect the surface without covering its texture.

Structural Honesty and Climate Adaptation
</h3>
<p>
Locsin believed that structural parts of a building, like beams and columns, should be left visible rather than hidden. He used traditional design details to handle the warm and humid Philippine climate. These included wide overhanging roofs to protect walls from heavy rain, lattices to filter sunlight, and open interior layouts that allowed air to flow freely. He also utilized local materials, such as brown tuff (locally called adobe) and dark pebbles, for wall and floor finishes.

Key Institutional and Public Projects
</h2>
<p>
Locsin designed several of the most recognizable public structures in the Philippines, many of which were built during the post-war reconstruction and development boom.   
</p>
<h3 class="my-h3">
Church of the Holy Sacrifice (1955)
</h3>
<p>
The Church of the Holy Sacrifice at the <a href="/kauswagan/articles/1188/today-in-philippine-history-june-18-1908-the-university-of-the-philippines-was-established" class="news_link">University of the Philippines</a> Diliman was Locsin's first major commission. Originally planned for the Ossorio family in Negros, the design was adapted when Father John Delaney, the Catholic chaplain at the university, requested a chapel that could seat 1,000 people and provide an open view.   
</p>
<p>
The circular church was the first in the Philippines to feature a central altar and a thin-shell concrete dome. The dome is three inches thick, spans 29.26 meters, and is supported by 32 concrete columns along its edge. This layout eliminated the separation between the choir and the congregation.   
</p>
<p>
The project was a collaboration among five artists who were later recognized as National Artists of the Philippines:

Alfredo Juinio served as the structural engineer, and David Consunji supervised the construction, which used 3,000 psi concrete - the first time this strength was utilized for a dome structure in the country.

<h3 class="my-h3">
Cultural Center of the Philippines (Tanghalang Pambansa, 1969)
</h3>
<p>
Commissioned by First Lady <a href="/kauswagan/articles/2454/today-in-philippine-history-july-2-1929-imelda-romualdez-was-born-in-san-miguel-manila" class="news_link">Imelda Marcos</a> as a national arts center along Manila Bay, this building is Locsin's most famous design. The facade features a large rectangular concrete block finished in textured marble, which projects 12 meters outward from the main entrance. It is supported by curved concrete columns, creating the impression that the massive block is floating. A large reflecting pool in front mirrors the building during the day, and the interior contains theaters, galleries, and a museum.

National Power Corporation (NPC) Buildings (1982)
</h3>
<p>
The National Power Corporation complex in Diliman, <a href="/articles/2989/the-historical-journey-of-quezon-city" class="news_link">Quezon City</a>, represents a modern interpretation of the traditional bahay kubo. The complex consists of two four-story rectangular blocks connected by an upper-level bridge.
