Like many young men of his generation seeking economic mobility, Calosa worked briefly as a magician in an itinerant circus troupe before emigrating to the territory of Hawaii to work on sugarcane plantations.

Calosa's eleven-year sojourn in Hawaii proved foundational. In 1924, he emerged as a labor organizer among Filipino plantation laborers, participating in major labor disputes and strikes organized against the Hawaiian Sugar Planters' Association. Upon returning to Pangasinan, Calosa settled in the barrio of Magallanes, Tayug, where he resumed farming. Under American rule, the label was indiscriminately applied by state officials to any peasant association that exhibited syncretic religious practices, secret oaths, or millenarian nationalist tendencies.
