When Dr. del Mundo passed away from cardiac arrest on <time datetime="2011-08-06">August 6, 2011</time>, three months shy of her 100th birthday, the Philippine state honored her with a full military state funeral at the <a href="/articles/3269/the-history-of-libingan-ng-mga-bayani" class="news_link">Libingan ng mga Bayani</a> (Cemetery of Heroes) and posthumously conferred upon her the Order of the Golden Heart with the rank of Grand Collar.

Fe del Mundo was born in <a href="/articles/3008/the-history-of-intramuros-the-walled-city-manila" class="news_link">Intramuros, Manila</a>, on <time datetime="1911-11-27">November 27, 1911</time>. She was the sixth of eight children born to Bernardo del Mundo, a prominent lawyer from Marinduque, and Paz Villanueva. Her early childhood was defined by high infant and child mortality, a pervasive feature of early 20th-century colonial Philippines. Three of her eight siblings died during infancy. The defining catalyst for her career occurred when her older sister, Elisa, died from appendicitis at eleven years of age. Elisa had expressed a childhood desire to become a doctor for the underprivileged, a dream that del Mundo consciously adopted as her own life vocation.

In <time datetime="1926">1926</time>, at fifteen years of age, del Mundo entered the <a href="/kauswagan/articles/1188/today-in-philippine-history-june-18-1908-the-university-of-the-philippines-was-established" class="news_link">University of the Philippines</a> Manila, obtaining her Associate of Arts degree in <time datetime="1928">1928</time>. She subsequently enrolled in the University of the Philippines College of Medicine. She completed her Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree in <time datetime="1933">1933</time>, graduating as the class valedictorian. The grave public health situation in the Philippines - where infant death rates remained exceptionally high due to preventable waterborne and vector-borne infections - led her to specialize in pediatrics, a discipline then in its infancy within the archipelago.

Recognizing her exceptional academic standing, Philippine Commonwealth President <a href="/articles/3338/manuel-l-quezon-personal-history-and-national-leadership" class="news_link">Manuel L. Quezon</a> offered del Mundo a full government scholarship to pursue advanced medical training at any institution in the United States.

In late <time datetime="1941">1941</time>, despite opportunities to remain in the United States, Dr. del Mundo returned to the Philippines shortly before the outbreak of World War II in the Pacific. Following the Japanese occupation of Manila in <time datetime="1942">1942</time>, foreign civilians and families were interned at the Santo Tomas Internment Camp. Joining the International Red Cross, del Mundo established a makeshift children's hospice within the internment camp.

Her tireless care for sick and displaced children earned her the epithet <strong>"The Angel of Santo Tomas"</strong>. When Japanese military authorities forcibly shut down the hospice in <time datetime="1943">1943</time>, the Mayor of Manila requested that del Mundo establish a dedicated municipal children's hospital. She was appointed director of the newly created Manila Children's Hospital. This appointment made her the first female physician to head a government general hospital in the Philippines.

The institution was later transformed into the North General Hospital (eventually renamed the Dr. Jose R. Reyes Memorial Medical Center). To raise the necessary capital, she sold her private home, personal vehicle, and most of her belongings. She supplemented these funds with bank loans and private gifts to construct the Children's Medical Center on Banawe Street in <a href="/articles/2989/the-historical-journey-of-quezon-city" class="news_link">Quezon City</a>.

Opened in <time datetime="1957">1957</time>, the facility was the first specialized pediatric hospital in the Philippines.
