Its mission was to provide electric light and power, along with an electric street railway system, to the bustling city of Manila and its surrounding suburbs. The facilities constructed by Meralco represented a significant milestone: they constituted the largest single investment of American private capital and know-how in the entire East Asia region.

For over four decades, Meralco played a crucial role in shaping the city's infrastructure. It introduced electric streetcars known then as Tranvia, revolutionizing public transportation for Manileños. These streetcars, complemented by buses in the 1920s, provided the city's first modern mass transit system.

World War II wreaked havoc on the railway system, rendering it beyond repair. In response, Meralco shifted its focus away from transportation and concentrated on providing electricity. The electric service powered much of the postwar rehabilitation and early industrialization of the newly independent Philippine Republic.
