The pinnacle of Elorde's career came on March 16, 1960, when he captured the world junior lightweight title (now known as super featherweight) by defeating American boxer Harold Gomes in a thrilling seventh-round knockout at the newly opened <a href="https://kahimyang.com/kauswagan/articles/1018/today-in-philippine-history-march-16-1960-the-araneta-coliseum-was-inaugurated" class="news_link">Araneta Coliseum</a> in <a href="https://kahimyang.com/articles/2989/the-historical-journey-of-quezon-city" class="news_link">Quezon City</a>. This victory was a defining moment for Philippine sports, as Elorde became the first Filipino to win a world boxing championship in that weight class. He went on to defend the title successfully for seven years, holding the crown until 1967 - an impressive reign that remains one of the longest in boxing history for the division.
