Aguinaldo's Capture and Surrender
</h4>
<p>
Aguinaldo was captured by American forces at his secret headquarters in Palanan, Isabela on March 23, 1901. Following his capture, he was held at the Malacañang palace. Although technically a prisoner of war, Aguinaldo was treated more as a guest than a captive from March 28th until April 20th of 1901.

The Oath of Allegiance
</h4>

It was Chief Justice <a href="https://kahimyang.com/kauswagan/articles/970/today-in-philippine-history-march-2-1847-cayetano-arellano-was-born-in-orion-bataan" class="news_link">Cayetano Arellano</a>, who had previously served as attorney general in Aguinaldo's cabinet, who persuaded him to swear allegiance to the United States. On April 19, 1901, Aguinaldo issued a proclamation acknowledging and accepting the sovereignty of the United States throughout the Philippine Archipelago.

The End of the First Republic
</h4>

With this act, Aguinaldo formally ended the First Republic and recognized the sovereignty of the U.S. over the Philippines. This marked a significant turning point in the history of the Philippines.

Aguinaldo's Legacy
</h4>
<p>
Aguinaldo is considered to be the country's first and the youngest President from March 22, 1897 to April 1,1901. Despite his government failing to obtain any foreign recognition, his legacy continues to be a significant part of Philippine history.
