Wartime Background: Bataan and the Death March
</h2>

During the Japanese invasion of the Philippines in 1942, Bataan became the scene of fierce fighting between Japanese forces and combined Filipino–American troops. Following the fall of Bataan in April 1942, thousands of exhausted prisoners of war were forced on the infamous <b>Bataan Death March</b> from starting points in Mariveles and Bagac, and many died from brutality, starvation, disease, and exhaustion along the route. Because of these events, Bataan - and especially the areas around the Death March markers - long remained associated with wartime trauma and strong anti‑Japanese sentiment.

By the late 1960s and early 1970s, however, religious and civic groups from both countries were increasingly involved in peace movements, interfaith dialogue, and youth exchanges, seeking to transform memories of hatred into commitments to reconciliation. Japan, under a pacifist constitution, was also working to rebuild ties with former wartime adversaries in Asia, including the Philippines, not only through diplomacy and economic assistance but also through symbolic gestures and people‑to‑people projects.

Conception of the Friendship Tower
</h2>
<p>
The idea for a peace monument in Bagac was sparked when a group of young Japanese visitors - linked with interfaith and peace initiatives - came to Bataan in the early 1970s. They were brought to the markers that indicate where the Bataan Death March began in Mariveles and Bagac, and there they learned about the suffering endured by Filipino and American soldiers and local civilians during the war. Moved by what they heard and saw, the visitors and their mentors envisioned a monument near this "hallowed ground" that would stand as a peace offering and a permanent reminder that such a tragedy must never be repeated.

The project was taken up by <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rissh%C5%8D_K%C5%8Dsei_Kai" class="news-link-ext" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Risshō Kōsei Kai</a> (RKK), a Japanese Buddhist lay organization known for its peace and interreligious work. In cooperation with the provincial government of Bataan and local Christian youth leaders - later organized as the Bataan Christian Youth Civic Circle (BCYCC) - RKK helped raise funds and coordinate the construction of the tower. Local officials and residents of Bagac supported the plan, recognizing that it could transform a place long associated with suffering into a site of reflection, hope, and international friendship.
