Background: From Invasion to the Bataan Defense
</h2>
<p>
Japan opened hostilities in the Philippines on <time datetime="1941-12-08">December 8, 1941</time>, striking American bases only hours after the attack on Pearl Harbor and quickly gaining air and naval superiority. In response, U.S. and Philippine Commonwealth forces implemented the prewar War <b>Plan Orange 3</b>, withdrawing to the Bataan Peninsula and the island fortress of Corregidor to deny Japan full control of Manila Bay and delay its advance.

General <a href="/articles/3006/general-douglas-macarthur-a-legacy-of-leadership-and-controversy" class="news_link">Douglas MacArthur</a> initially commanded the United States Army Forces in the Far East (USAFFE), but in March 1942 he departed for Australia on orders from President Franklin D. Roosevelt. <b>Lieutenant General Jonathan Wainwright</b> succeeded him as overall commander in the Philippines, while Major General Edward P. King Jr. took direct command of the American–Filipino forces defending Bataan.

Edward P. King Jr. and the Situation on Bataan
</h2>
<p>
Edward Postell King Jr. was a career artillery officer from Georgia, a law graduate and decorated veteran of the First World War who had earned the Army Distinguished Service Medal as a key staff officer in Washington. Assigned to the Philippines in 1940, he became one of MacArthur's senior ground commanders and, by March 1942, found himself leading the desperate defense of Bataan.

By early April 1942, after nearly four months of continuous fighting, King's forces were in catastrophic condition. Ammunition stocks were low, food rations had been repeatedly cut, and medical supplies were almost exhausted; many soldiers were weakened by malaria, dysentery, and other diseases and could barely continue combat operations.

A Commander's Dilemma: Orders vs. Lives
</h2>
<p>
MacArthur and Wainwright had insisted that their commanders must not surrender and should resist as long as possible. On the front lines, however, King faced about 75,000 men - roughly 63,000 Filipinos and 12,000 Americans - who were starving, sick, and out of effective combat capability, as well as thousands of civilians trapped in the battle zone.

Convinced that further resistance could bring only a pointless massacre, King chose to disobey the no-surrender orders in order to save the lives of his men. He understood that this decision might cost him his career and could lead to court-martial after the war, but he judged that the humanitarian imperative outweighed obedience to previous instructions.

<h2>
The Road to Surrender: Lamao and Balanga
</h2>

On the morning of April 9, 1942, King sent representatives under a white flag toward Japanese lines near Lamao, in the town of Limay, Bataan, to negotiate a ceasefire and surrender. Japanese officers, acting on behalf of Fourteenth Army commander Lieutenant General <a href="kauswagan/articles/2878/april-3-1946-japanese-general-masaharu-homma-was-executed-by-firing-squad-in-los-ba-os-laguna" class="news_link">Masaharu Homma</a>, were initially unwilling to accept the surrender because King was not the overall commander in the Philippines, insisting that they wanted to negotiate with Wainwright.

King and several senior officers were effectively held and taken to Balanga, where Homma had established his headquarters; negotiations continued near the old Balanga Elementary School, which later became the site of a museum and monuments depicting the surrender scene. Today, a life-sized monument and exhibits in Balanga and nearby sites recall these tense meetings between King and the Japanese staff.

Unconditional Surrender to Colonel Nakayama
</h2>
<p>
During the Balanga negotiations, King conferred with Colonel Motoo Nakayama, senior operations officer of the Japanese Fourteenth Army and representative of General Homma. After hours of discussion, King agreed to surrender unconditionally in his personal capacity; the Japanese maintained that they would accept only his own surrender and would require each Filipino–American unit on Bataan to disarm and capitulate separately as they were rounded up.

A commemorative marker stands at Lamao, Limay, honoring the location and emphasizing that King chose surrender to prevent the slaughter of more than 75,000 men under his command and to halt a hopeless bloodbath. The inscription stresses that King knowingly risked a court-martial in order to save the lives of his disease-ridden and starving troops.

The Fall of Bataan and Disarming of the Troops
</h2>
<p>
Once King's decision had been communicated, organized resistance on Bataan quickly crumbled. Because the Japanese refused to recognize a single formal surrender of all forces, they treated each formation separately, ordering units to cease fire, destroy or abandon their remaining weapons, and assemble at designated points along the highways and in the southern portion of the peninsula.
</p>
<p>
Within a short time, tens of thousands of exhausted Filipino and American soldiers were concentrated around Mariveles in southern Bataan and in the vicinity of Balanga, awaiting Japanese orders for transfer to prisoner-of-war camps. What followed would be remembered as one of the most brutal forced marches in modern history.

The Bataan Death March
</h2>
<p>
Following the surrender, around 76,000 prisoners - about 64,000 Filipinos and 12,000 Americans - were forced to march northward under guard from Mariveles and other points in Bataan to San Fernando, Pampanga. From San Fernando, they were packed into overcrowded boxcars and transported by rail to Capas, Tarlac, then forced to march the final stretch to Camp O'Donnell, a former training camp converted by the Japanese into a prison camp.

<p>
The distance from Bataan to <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Camp_O%27Donnell" class="news-link-ext" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Camp O'Donnell</a> is commonly estimated at roughly 100 to 140 kilometers, traversed in tropical heat with almost no food or water. Prisoners were subjected to physical abuse, arbitrary killings, and “execution-style” shootings; many collapsed from exhaustion, dehydration, or untreated wounds and were bayoneted, shot, or simply left to die by the roadside. Historians estimate that only about 54,000 of the original 76,000 prisoners reached Camp O'Donnell, though the precise number of deaths and escapees remains uncertain.
