Playing lead roles in more than 100 movies, and producing of over 70 films, Estrada's popularity served as his leverage to carve a name for himself in the field of politics.

He is a multi-awarded actor who founded the Movie Workers Welfare Fund (MOWELFUND) that provides movie industry workers with financial and professional assistance.

Prior to being elected as President in 1998, he served as mayor of San Juan (1967-1986), turning it to one of Metro Manila's outstanding municipalities (now a city), building public schools both for elementary and high school and sent impoverished children to school for free. He built parks, playgrounds, and modern police stations, among others.

He served as Senator for single term (1987-1992), then as Vice President in 1992 under the administration of President Fidel V. Ramos.

On June 30, 1998, Estrada was sworn into presidency in historic Malolos, Bulacan paying tribute to the cradle of the First Philippine Republic.

Notably, during his presidency amid the Asian Financial Crisis worsened by a decline in agricultural production due to poor weather conditions, the economy recovered 3.4 percent in 1999 and 4 percent in 2000 under his watch.

As President and commander-in-chief of the armed forces in the year 2000, he declared an "all-out-war" against the Moro Islamic Liberation Front and captured its headquarters and other camps.

However, allegations of corruption spawned an impeachment trial in the Senate, and in 2001 Estrada was ousted from power. In 2007, he was sentenced by Sandiganbayan "special court" to reclusion perpetua for plunder, but was later granted pardon by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

Erap is the current mayor of Manila.
