On May 6, 1942, Corregidor, the strongest fortress of the United States in the Orient, was surrendered unconditionally to the Japanese army.

Following the earlier surrender of Filipino-American forces in Bataan, General Jonathan Wainwright decided to surrender his remaining forces of about 12,000 men in the island.

The surrender marked the total collapse of defense against the Japanese invasion.
