On June 17, 1972, by virtue of Republic Act No. 6430, the Davao del Norte was renamed to Davao.


On January 30, 1998, President Fidel V. Ramos signed into law Republic Act No. 8470 creating the Province of Compostela Valley, a carved out of the 
new Davao Province. Its capital is Nabunturan. 


On December 2019, the Province of Compostela Valley was renamed the Province of Davao de Oro when a plebiscite ratified the law that proposed to rename the province.


Davao Occidental was created by virtue of Republic Act 10360 enacted on July 23, 2013. The province is carved out from the southern part of Davao del Sur. A plebiscite was held on October 28, 2013 along with the Barangay elections, and the majority of votes cast were "Yes", ratifying the province.
