The Backstory: The General Who Refused to Bend
</h2>

Ricarte’s path to the Manila courtroom on that June morning began years earlier. Following the outbreak of the Philippine-American War in 1899, Ricarte operated as a brilliant and aggressive military strategist. Captured by American forces in 1900 at Paco Bridge, he was deported to Guam in 1901 alongside other high-profile political exiles, including the "Sublime Paralytic",  Apolinario Mabini.

By 1903, the U.S. government offered the exiles a choice: swear an oath of allegiance to the United States and return home, or remain in permanent exile. While a terminally ill Mabini chose to take the oath so he could see his homeland one last time before dying of cholera, Ricarte adamantly refused. Banished to Hong Kong, Ricarte immediately began organizing a revolutionary committee. He established a shadow military government called the Gobierno Triunvirato Dictatorial Filipino (Filipino Dictatorial Triumvirate Government) and clandestinely slipped back into the Philippines in December 1903 under the alias "Jose Garcia." His objective was clear: revive the dying embers of the revolution and oust the Americans.

The $10,000 Betrayal at Mariveles
</h2>

For months, Ricarte moved through the provinces of Rizal and Bataan, attempting to rally his old comrades. However, the revolutionary landscape had fractured; many former generals had already accepted positions within the American civil government.

In early 1904, a severe illness left Ricarte bedridden for nearly two months. Seizing upon his vulnerability, a clerk within his own outfit named Luis Baltazar turned informant. Lured by a massive $10,000 bounty - an absolute fortune at the time - Baltazar tipped off the Philippine Constabulary. On Sunday, May 29, 1904, American agents ambushed a still-recovering Ricarte at a cockpit in Mariveles, Bataan, where he was attempting to meet with messengers to finalize a general military mobilization.

<h2>
The Trial and the "Sagunto" Defiance
</h2>

When Ricarte was brought before the Court of First Instance in Manila on June 9, 1904, the American prosecution expected a broken man. Instead, they faced a fiery revolutionary. Presided over by Judge Manuel Araullo, the courtroom became a stage for Ricarte’s unwavering ideology.

When questioned about his insurgent activities and his intent to launch a bloody assault on Manila, Ricarte calmly delivered a line that would echo through Philippine history:

This was a profoundly loaded historical reference. Sagunto refers to the ancient Iberian city that, when besieged by Hannibal's Carthaginian army, chose mass suicide and total, fiery resistance over surrender. Ricarte was declaring to the American court that he would rather see Manila burned to the ground than see it comfortably colonized.

Judge Araullo found Ricarte guilty on all counts. He was sentenced to one and a half years of imprisonment for illegal possession of firearms, alongside six years of imprisonment with hard labor and a $10,000 fine for conspiracy and rebellion.
