Dr. José Rizal was born on the moonlit Wednesday evening of June 19, 1861, in the lakeside town of Calamba, Laguna. He was baptized three days later, on June 22, by the parish priest Father Rufino Collantes, with Father Pedro Casañas serving as his godfather. It is noted in historical accounts that Father Collantes was so struck by the unusually large size of the infant's head that he prophetically told the family to care for the child well, as he would someday become a great man.

His son, Francisco Mercado, and grandson, Juan Mercado, both served as gobernadorcillos (municipal mayors) of Biñan, Laguna. Dedicated to the memory of the GOMBURZA martyrs, El Filibusterismo was much darker and more political than the Noli. Through the tragic failure of Simoun's plots, Rizal warned that revolution without a moral foundation and an educated populace would only lead to further bloodshed and tyranny.

However, his novel had caused an uproar. The Permanent Commission of Censorship declared the Noli heretical, scandalous, and subversive. Governor-General Emilio Terrero, though personally liberal-minded, could not protect Rizal from the fury of the friars. For his own safety and to protect his family from retaliation, Terrero advised Rizal to leave the country once more. On February 3, 1888, Rizal left Manila after a six-month stay.
