July 24, 1890: Guillermo Tolentino was born in Malolos, Bulacan

On July 24, 1890, a future pillar of Philippine art was born in the historic town of Malolos, Bulacan. Guillermo Estrella Tolentino, who would go on to be hailed as the "Father of Philippine Arts" and a National Artist for Sculpture, entered the world as the fourth of eight children in a family of modest means. His father, Isidro Flores Tolentino, was a tailor whose only artistic inclination was a passion for playing the guitar, a skill he passed on to his son.
