Family and Early Life

Santiago was the only child of General <a href="/articles/3324/mariano-malia-alvarez-filipino-revolutionary-leader" class="news_link">Mariano Alvarez</a> (1818–1924) and <b>Nicolasa Virata</b>. His father was already a man of standing in Cavite: a former <i>gobernadorcillo</i> (town head) of Noveleta and, later, one of the most senior generals of the <a href="/kauswagan/articles/906/about-the-katipunan" class="news_link">Katipunan</a>'s Cavite chapter. That lineage placed Santiago at the center of revolutionary politics almost from birth.

Shortly after Santiago's birth, the family relocated from Imus to nearby Noveleta, a coastal town on Manila Bay where he spent his childhood. He began his formal education there at age seven under a teacher named Antonio Dacon, then moved on at ten to a school in Cavite Nuevo (present-day Cavite City) under Ignacio Vilocillo. Hoping he would become a teacher, his parents later sent him to Manila, where he studied at a school on Camba Street in Tondo run by Macario Hernández.

That path toward a teaching career was interrupted in 1896, when the Katipunan uprising broke out and swept Cavite into war. Santiago would not return to formal schooling until after the revolution, when he enrolled at the University of Santo Tomas before transferring to the Colegio de San Juan de Letran, where he completed a Bachelor of Arts. He went on to study law at the Liceo de Manila.

Into the Katipunan
</h2>

Even before the outbreak of armed revolt, Santiago had already risen within the Katipunan's provincial structure in Cavite, serving as <i>delegado general</i> of its provincial council - evidence that the Alvarez name carried real authority in the secret society well before the fighting began. When the revolution reached Cavite in 1896, the province split, as it famously did, into two rival Katipunan councils: the <b>Magdiwang</b>, based in Noveleta and led by the Alvarez family's circle, and the <b>Magdalo</b>, based in Kawit and associated with <a href="/articles/3325/emilio-aguinaldos-life-and-leadership" class="news_link">Emilio Aguinaldo</a>. Santiago threw himself fully into the Magdiwang cause, rising quickly from captain general to commander-in-chief of its fighting forces.

He fought at his father's side from the earliest engagements. On <time datetime="1896-08-31">August 31, 1896</time>, Santiago, Mariano, and their cousin General Pascual Álvarez led the assault that drove the Spanish civil guard out of Noveleta, killing two Spanish officers and capturing the garrison along with 29 firearms. When Spanish forces tried to retake the town days later, the Alvarez cousins again organized its defense and held it. Santiago went on to see action across much of Cavite - in Naic, Maragondon, Magallanes, Tanza, Alfonso, Silang, Imus, and San Francisco de Malabon (present-day General Trias) - a campaign map that reads almost like a tour of the province he grew up in.

The Battle of Dalahican
</h2>

Santiago Alvarez's defining moment came at the <a href="/articles/3012/the-battle-of-binakayan-dalahican" class="news_link">Battle of Dalahican</a>, fought from November 9 to 11, 1896, against Spanish forces under Governor-General Ramón Blanco y Erenas. The engagement stretched across roughly 36 hours and ranked among the bloodiest single actions of the revolution's early phase. Alvarez's forces repelled Blanco's army and inflicted a decisive defeat on the Spanish column - a victory that cemented his reputation in Cavite and gave rise to his enduring title, "Hero of the Battle of Dalahican", a distinction still remembered in present-day Cavite City.
