Osmeña entered the world in a modest home along Calle Progreso (now Osmeña Boulevard) in Cebu City. He was raised in a single-parent household by his mother, Juana Osmeña y Suico, a 20-year-old widow from a prominent Chinese-Filipino merchant family.


For nearly a century and a half, Osmeña's biological father was one of Philippine history's most persistent mysteries. Osmeña himself steadfastly refused to discuss his parentage throughout his lifetime, and historians long debated whether his father was the Chinese immigrant tycoon Pedro Singson Gotiaoco or Don Antonio Sanson, a wealthy haciendero from Borbon, Cebu.

Published in Spanish and Cebuano, El Nuevo Día became a courageous voice for Filipino nationalism under early American military occupation. The paper frequently tested censorship limits imposed by American authorities, resulting in repeated threats of suppression and sedition charges against Osmeña.
