Historical Context: Samar's Resistance
</h2>

Following the capture of <a href="/articles/3325/emilio-aguinaldos-life-and-leadership" class="news_link">President Emilio Aguinaldo</a> in <time datetime="1901-03">March 1901</time>, U.S. forces declared major combat operations largely concluded across much of Luzon. However, intense resistance endured in the Visayas under <a href="/kauswagan/articles/1476/february-11-1860-vicente-lukban-was-born-in-labo-camarines-norte" class="news_link">General Vicente Lukban</a>, the military governor of Samar. Lukban organized an extensive network of guerrilla fighters throughout the island's rugged terrain.


On <time datetime="1901-08-11">August 11, 1901</time>, Company C of the 9th U.S. Infantry Regiment, composed of 74 veteran soldiers under the command of Captain Thomas W. Connell (a West Point graduate), arrived in Balangiga. The U.S. garrison was deployed ostensibly to block supplies from reaching Lukban's guerrillas and to protect the town from local bandits.


Though local municipal leaders, led by Presidente Pedro Abayan, initially welcomed Company C with apparent cooperation, they were secretly in league with General Lukban's forces to plan a coordinated uprising.

Escalation and Root Causes
</h2>

Tensions between the townspeople and U.S. troops mounted rapidly due to severe cultural misunderstandings and heavy-handed military governance:

The Tuba Store Incident: On <time datetime="1901-09-22">September 22, 1901</time>, two drunken American soldiers attempted to assault a local girl tending a tuba (coconut palm wine) shop. Her two brothers intervened and severely beat the soldiers.

Collective Detention: In retaliation, Captain Connell ordered the arrest and detention of 80 male residents in cramped Sibley tents.
</li>
<li>
Confiscation of Bolos and Food: Connell ordered all sharp bolos (working machetes used for agriculture) seized throughout the town. Additionally, American troops confiscated and destroyed stored rice supplies to enforce discipline - an act deeply insulting to local honor and survival.

Faced with severe humiliation, forced labor, and impending famine, police chief Valeriano Abanador and rebel officer <a href="/articles/2993/eugenio-daza-a-revolutionary-and-educator-was-born-november-15-1870-in-borongan-samar" class="news_link">Captain Eugenio Daza</a> organized a comprehensive plan of self-defense and revenge.

The Strategy: Disguises and Infiltration
</h2>


The planning for the attack was meticulous and covert:

Smuggling Weapons: Under the guise of town cleanup and tax labor, dozens of guerrilla fighters infiltrated Balangiga from surrounding villages.

The "Cholera" Cover: The night before the attack, women were evacuated from the town center. Local men disguised as female mourners carried wooden coffins into the Church of San Lorenzo de Martir, claiming they held child victims of a cholera outbreak. Inside the coffins were hidden bolos and short daggers.
