Mabini's release and return to Nagtahan were only the final notes in a far more complex narrative - one shaped by his arrest, confinement, and forced exile, all of which reveal the depth of his steadfast defiance against American rule.

The Master Spirit on the Run
</h2>

By late 1899, the Philippine-American War had turned into a desperate struggle. The conventional Philippine Revolutionary Army was collapsing, forcing <a href="/articles/3325/emilio-aguinaldos-life-and-leadership" class="news_link">President Emilio Aguinaldo</a> and his cabinet to flee into the mountains and shift to guerrilla warfare.

<p>
Mabini, who had lost the use of his legs to polio in 1896, was known as the "Brains of the Revolution" and the "Sublime Paralytic." His condition severely hampered his ability to evade the advancing American troops. On <time datetime="1899-12-10">December 10, 1899</time>, American forces - aided by Macabebe Scouts - finally captured him in the remote town of Cuyapo, Nueva Ecija.

Imprisonment at Anda Jail
</h2>

After his capture, Mabini was brought to Manila as a high-value prisoner of war. Despite his physical paralysis, his intellectual defiance remained unbroken.

The American Military Governor, <a href="/articles/3160/general-elwell-s-otis-a-military-legacy-in-the-philippines" class="news_link">General Elwell Otis</a>, personally assessed Mabini and described him vividly:

<p>
Otis offered Mabini his freedom on the condition of parole, provided he agreed not to stir up trouble. Mabini famously declined, replying that he had not changed his convictions and that, without the means to support himself, he could not put his freedom to any use anyway.
