<p>
Polavieja came with General Lachambre and with additional troops and supplies.  Lacambre, the deputy commander of the Spanish forces,  took the field immediately against the Filipino revolutionaries. 
</p>
<p>
He resigned due to physical ailments and begged Spain to appoint a successor.  He embarked for Spain on April 15, 1897.  He was succeded by General Primo de Rivera who became governor-general for the second time. Lachambre temporarily the took governorship for a few weeks while awaiting the arrival of Primo de Rivera. 
</p>

Dr. Jose P. Rizal was shot during Polavieja's term.
