On February 6, 1964, General Emilio Aguinaldo, first President of the Philippine Republic, died at 3:05 in the morning at the Veterans Memorial Hospital where he had been confined for over a year, at the age of 95.

On the event of Aguinaldo's death, President Diosdado Macapagal issued an executive proclamation providing for a 15-day mourning for the General. President Macapagal on this date also ordered renaming of Camp Murphy to Camp Aguinaldo.

Necrological services were held on February 15 with Macapagal, Ferdinand Marcos, Villareal, and Justice Sabino Padilla as eulogists. The state funeral of Aguinaldo was held on the 16th attended by Macapagal and other high government officials. His body was interred in a tomb built on the grounds of his Kawit residence.

Earlier on May of the previous year, Aguinaldo, while confined at the Hospital, signed a deed donating his historic house at Kawit, Cavite to the Philippine Government on condition that he will have the right to continue to live there until his death. The house is now a national shrine called the Aguinaldo Shrine. It was in this house where the General was born on March 22, 1869. The independence of the Philippines from Spain was also declared in this house on June 12, 1898.

Camp Aguinaldo (Camp General Emilio Aguinaldo) is the present headquarters of the Armed Forces of the Philippines located along Epifanio de los Santos Avenue in Quezon City.
