On April 5, 1964, General Douglas MacArthur died in the Walter Reed Medical Center, Washington DC, of biliary cirrhosis, early afternoon Sunday, 3:39am Manila time. The US President on April 6, ordered flags half-masted until the MacArthur funeral. In Manila, President Macapagal issued a proclamation declaring a period of mourning from April 6 to the day of the funeral.

MacArthur was eulogized in the US Senate on April 6.

Carlos Romulo as Macapagal's representative took a plane for the United States on April 7 to attend the funeral.

MacArthur's body was taken by highway to New York to lie in state in the Seventh Regiment Armory and was taken by train back to Washington Wednesday, to lie in state in the Capitol. The body was flown to Norfolk, Virginia, on April 11, 1964 (Saturday), for burial in a memorial mausoleum already prepared in accordance with MacArthur's wishes.

Norfolk was the birthplace of General MacArthur's mother.
