<p>
He studied at the San Juan de Letran College, where he finished high school in 1921, and at the University of Santo Tomas, where he obtained his Bachelor of Laws degree in 1925. He passed the bar examination with a rating of 84.4 percent. He did not go into private practice but, instead, helped his older brother Eugenio manage a chain of Lopez enterprises. At the same time, he indulged his interest in journalism and education.

<p>
He was among the founders of Iloilo College and the Feati University in Manila. When Iloilo College evolved into a university, he became its 

president. Feati University pioneered in technological education after the war.
