The disappointing romance of the Rajah's daughter, Princess Makandala
(In Manila in 1543; from the account of Padre Agandaru Moriz, official historian of Manila.)
Let me hear no more, my father, of marriage with this Spanish captain. It is not seemly for a Malayan maiden to be flouted by such an adventurer.
He reached here with a shattered ship and a starving crew, driven back from his attempted voyage across the great sea to the distant land whence he came. All he has wanted has been to repair his ship, restore his men to strength, procure provisions and stores, and to make his escape to the Moluccas, where are others like him, taking the jewels and gold that your liberality has lavished upon him.
