Aquino Sr. received a robust education befitting his social standing. He was first taught by a private tutor before studying under Bartolome Tablante in Pampanga and Modesto Joaquin in Bacolor. He then entered the <a href="https://kahimyang.com/kauswagan/articles/2884/the-history-of-colegio-de-san-juan-de-letran" class="news_link">Colegio de San Juan de Letran</a> in Manila, where he distinguished himself by winning medals in oratory and becoming a star student in Philosophy. At the exceptionally young age of 13, he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree. His academic pursuits continued at the <a href="https://kahimyang.com/articles/3223/a-historical-account-of-the-university-of-santo-tomas-a-chronicle-of-resilience-scholarship-and-national-identity" class="news_link">University of Santo Tomas</a>, where he completed his law degree in 1913 and was admitted to the bar the following year.

His personal life was marked by two significant marriages. In May 1916, he married Maria Urquico, with whom he had four children: Antonio, Servillano, Milagros, and Erlinda. After Maria's death from cancer in 1928, he remarried two years later to his third cousin, Aurora Lampa Aquino. Quezon</a>.

This period highlights his role as a quintessential member of the Philippine political elite - a successful, mainstream politician who thrived within the established institutional framework of his time. Aquino Sr., as one of the most prominent Commonwealth officials to have stayed, was recruited to join this new government. His role was central to the Japanese effort to control the Philippines. He was appointed Director-General of the Kapisanan sa Paglilingkod sa Bagong Pilipinas (<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KALIBAPI" class="news-link-ext" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer">KALIBAPI</a>), which translates to the <b class="lt-bold">"Association for Service to the New Philippines"</b>. The Japanese dissolved all existing political parties, making KALIBAPI the sole political organization and a key instrument for Japanese propaganda. The organization's goal was not merely political; it was a "mass movement" aimed at "re-Orientalizing" the Filipino populace, pushing them to reject their Western influences and embrace a Japanese-led <b class="lt-bold">"Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere"</b>. Aquino Sr. later assumed the roles of Speaker of the National Assembly and was the de facto Vice President under Laurel.

The motivations for leaders like Aquino Sr. to participate in this government were not simple. Historical analysis suggests that for many, collaboration was a pragmatic choice born out of the principle of survival. By working with the Japanese, they believed they could act as a buffer between the brutal occupying forces and the Filipino people, mitigating the suffering and devastation of war. This perspective frames their actions not as an ideological embrace of Japan, but as a series of morally and ethically fraught decisions made under duress.

This period of his life represents a stark pivot from his pre-war career. The man who had been a key figure in the American-backed movement for independence now served a government that actively sought to expel Western influences. His wartime titles and affiliation with KALIBAPI became the defining features of his legacy, effectively overshadowing his conventional political achievements and casting a long shadow over the Aquino name. This dramatic shift highlights the complex and often painful choices that political leaders are forced to make in times of national crisis, where the lines between patriotism and treason are blurred by the realities of occupation and survival.

Post-War Reckoning and a Sudden End (1945-1947)

With the liberation of the Philippines from Japanese control, Benigno Aquino Sr. faced a post-war reckoning. As American and Filipino forces advanced, the government of the Second Philippine Republic, including Aquino, was moved to Baguio and then flown to Japan. On September 15, 1945, following Japan's surrender, Aquino Sr., along with José P. Laurel and other officials, was arrested by American forces. He was subsequently imprisoned at Yokohama Prison and later at <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sugamo_Prison" class="news-link-ext" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer">Sugamo Prison</a>.

In July 1946, Aquino Sr. was flown back to the Philippines to face charges of treason before the newly established People's Court. This marked the beginning of a legally and politically fraught period. The legal case was built on the treason law, which required a "two-witness rule" for overt acts to be proven. A legal dispute arose regarding a judge, Eusebio M. Lopez, who was accused by the prosecution of being biased in favor of the political collaborators. Judge Lopez had expressed the view that the actions of Filipino leaders during the occupation were not treasonous, a stance that was considered a challenge to the prosecution's case. The legal proceedings, however, never reached a final verdict.

A crucial factual point that is often misunderstood about Aquino Sr.'s life is the outcome of this trial. The report must state definitively that Benigno Aquino Sr. was not convicted of treason nor sentenced to death. After entering a plea of innocence, he was released on bail on September 11, 1946, and his case was still pending before the People's Court when he passed away. On December 20, 1947, Aquino Sr. died of a heart attack at the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rizal_Memorial_Coliseum" class="news-link-ext" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer">Rizal Memorial Coliseum</a> in Manila while watching a boxing match. His death effectively ended the legal proceedings against him, leaving the question of his guilt or innocence officially unresolved in the eyes of the law.
