Lineage, Early Life, and the Seeds of Rebellion

Isabelo was born in Vigan, Ilocos Sur, to an intellectually gifted but volatile household. His father was Elías de los Reyes, a local government official. His mother was <a href="/kauswagan/articles/657/today-in-philippine-history-october-4-1884-leona-florentino-died-in-vigan-ilocos-sur" class="news_link">Leona Florentino</a>, celebrated today as the mother of Philippine women's literature and the first Filipina poet to achieve international acclaim (her works were exhibited in Paris and Madrid).

When Isabelo was just six years old, his parents' marriage fractured. He was taken from his mother and committed to the care of a wealthy relative, Don Mena Crisologo, a prominent writer and politician.

The Father of Philippine Folklore and Vernacular Press

By 1886, at age 22, Isabelo had qualified as a notary public. However, Spanish law prohibited individuals from practicing law until the age of 25. Blocked from the courtroom, he unleashed his energy into journalism and cultural research.

Discovering "El Saber Popular"
</h3>

In the mid-1880s, the Spanish newspaper La Oceanía Española ran an appeal asking readers to document local customs. Isabelo didn't just respond; he turned it into a grand passion. He meticulously recorded the traditions of Ilocos, Malabon, and Zambales.

In 1887, at just 23 years old, his manuscript El Folk-lore Filipino won a silver medal at the prestigious Exposición Filipina in Madrid. This groundbreaking work effectively established him as the country's pioneer ethnographer.

Changing the Media Landscape
</h3>

In 1889, Isabelo founded El Ilocano, the very first vernacular newspaper in the Philippines written completely in a local language. Through this paper and his regular contributions to Madrid journals, he walked a razor's edge - openly criticizing the administrative corruption of Spanish authorities and the overwhelming, unchecked power of the religious friars.

Revolution, Bilibid, and Spanish Exile
</h2>

Isabelo's sharp pen earned him a reputation as a highly dangerous subversive. When the Philippine Revolution erupted in <time datetime="1896-08">August 1896</time>, Spanish authorities immediately suspected him of complicity with the Katipunan.
</p>
<p>
On <time datetime="1897-02-13">February 13, 1897</time>, he was arrested and thrown into Bilibid Prison. While he was locked away, tragedy struck: his first wife, Josefa Sevilla, passed away. He was briefly let out under heavy guard to attend her funeral and mourn with their six children before being thrown back into a cell.

Inside Bilibid, Isabelo authored his famous Sensacional Memoria (Sensational Memorandum). Addressed directly to the Governor-General, the document flipped the script: it argued that the true instigators of the revolution were the abusive Spanish friars themselves.

Fearing his influence, the colonial government deported him to Spain, incarcerating him in the notorious <b>Montjuich Castle</b> in Barcelona.

<h3 class="my-h3">
The Birth of "Filipino Socialism"
</h3>

His exile proved to be a historical turning point. Following his release under the terms of the Pact of Biak-na-Bato, Isabelo remained in Madrid. He immersed himself in the European zeitgeist, deeply studying the works of Karl Marx, Friedrich Engels, and various European anarcho-syndicalists.
</p>
<p>
Even while working as a counselor for the Spanish Ministry of Ultramar (Overseas Ministry) from 1898 to 1901, and marrying his second wife, a Spanish woman named María Ángeles López Montero, his radical nationalism never wavered. When the United States annexed the Philippines, he pivoted his focus toward American imperialism, publishing anti-colonial newspapers like Filipinas Ante Europa with the bold slogan: "Against North America, no; against imperialism, yes, until death!"
