A Daughter of Taal
</h2>

Marcela grew up in her family's ancestral house in Taal, a home built in the 1770s by her grandparents, Don Andres Sauza Mariño and Doña Eugenia Diokno Mariño. The Mariños were among the town's wealthier and more devout families, and Marcela herself was well regarded locally - townsfolk reportedly called her <strong>"Roselang Bubog"</strong>, an affectionate title likening her to a virgin enshrined in the parish church.

Taal was, and still is, known for its needlework traditions, and it was almost expected that a girl of Marcela's standing would learn to sew. Her more formal education, however, took her away from home: she was sent to Manila to study at Santa Catalina College, a school for girls run by Dominican nuns inside the Walled City of <a href="/articles/3008/the-history-of-intramuros-the-walled-city-manila" class="news_link">Intramuros</a>. There she completed her elementary and secondary schooling and was trained in Spanish, music, and the "feminine crafts" and social graces expected of a young woman of her class. Some accounts also describe her as a capable singer who occasionally performed in zarzuelas back in Batangas. She divided her girlhood between the convent in Manila and her family's home in Taal, and it was during these years that she refined the needlework skills that would later place her in the country's history books.

Marriage to Felipe Agoncillo
</h2>
<p>
Marcela did not marry young. At thirty - already a mature age for a bride in her era - she wed <a href="/kauswagan/articles/1148/today-in-philippine-history-may-26-1859-felipe-agoncillo-was-born-in-taal-batangas" class="news_link">Felipe Encarnacion Agoncillo</a>, a fellow native of Taal from an equally prosperous family. Felipe was already serving as a judge by the time they married, and he would go on to become one of the most consequential Filipino lawyers of his generation, eventually recognized as the country's first diplomat for his role in pressing the Filipino cause abroad. The couple settled first in Taal before moving to a two-story house on M.H. del Pilar Street in Malate, Manila, near Malate Church.

The marriage produced six daughters: Lorenza ("Enchang"), Gregoria ("Goring"), Eugenia ("Nene"), Marcela ("Celing," named after her mother in the belief that she would be the last child), Adela (who died at age three), and finally Maria ("Maring"), the last surviving child, born years later in Hong Kong. Most of the Agoncillo daughters became teachers rather than marrying - Gregoria, notably, became the first Filipina to graduate from Oxford University - and Marcela raised them with a simple, often-repeated piece of advice: to live honestly, work hard, and never depend on inherited family property. Beyond the household, the family was known for its charity; every Thursday, Marcela and her daughters distributed alms and bags of rice to the needy who lined up at their driveway, a practice that continued until Felipe's retirement from public life.

Exile in Hong Kong
</h2>

The Agoncillos' comfortable domestic life was upended by the outbreak of the Philippine Revolution in 1896. Felipe, increasingly viewed by Spanish authorities as a <em>filibustero</em> - an agitator for reform - learned that the Governor-General intended to have him deported. He fled first to Yokohama, Japan, and then settled in the British colony of Hong Kong, joining a growing community of Filipino exiles. Nearly two years later, Marcela and their daughters followed him into exile, leaving behind the comforts of Manila. The family rented a house at 535 Morrison Hill Road in the Wan Chai district - modest quarters that would soon become a meeting place for the movement Felipe and his fellow exiles were building. It was in Hong Kong, in 1906, that Marcela gave birth to Maria, her sixth and last child.

The Agoncillo residence turned into something close to a revolutionary safehouse. Felipe, an exile himself, opened the door to any Filipino who sought refuge, and the house became a regular meeting point for figures such as General <a href="/articles/3325/emilio-aguinaldos-life-and-leadership" class="news_link">Emilio Aguinaldo</a> and General <a href="/articles/3380/antonio-luna-the-scientific-soldier" class="news_link">Antonio Luna</a> as they organized what would become known as the Hong Kong Junta. <a href="/kauswagan/articles/462/today-in-philippine-history-august-9-1876-josephine-bracken-was-born-in-victoria-hong-kong" class="news_link">Josephine Bracken</a>, the fiancée of the executed reformist <a href="/kauswagan/articles/1190/today-in-philippine-history-june-19-1861-dr-jose-p-rizal-was-born-in-calamba-laguna" class="news_link">Jose Rizal</a>, is also said to have sought shelter there when Spanish authorities threatened her.

<h2>
Commissioned to Sew a Nation's Flag
</h2>
<p>
After the <a href="/articles/3299/pact-of-biak-na-bato-1897-philippine-revolution-history" class="news_link">Pact of Biak-na-Bato</a> was signed in <time datetime="1897-12">December 1897</time>, Aguinaldo visited the Agoncillo household in Hong Kong during his own exile. It was there that he asked Marcela to hand-sew a flag - one that would carry a design meant to embody the aspirations of the revolution and, soon after, of an independent Philippine state.
</p>
<p>
Marcela did not work alone. She enlisted her eldest daughter <strong>Lorenza</strong>, and a family friend, <strong>Delfina Herbosa Natividad</strong>, who happened to be Jose Rizal's niece through his sister <a href="/articles/3194/luc-a-rizal-steadfast-sister-in-the-rizal-legacy" class="news_link">Lucia</a>. Working partly by hand and partly with a sewing machine, the three women labored over the design for five days. The task was harder than it sounds: at one point they had to unpick and redo their work because the rays of the flag's sun were not oriented correctly, straining their eyes and hands in the process.

<p>
The finished flag was made of fine silk, purchased from a shop in Hong Kong, and trimmed with gold embroidery. Its design paired a blue and a red horizontal field with a white equilateral triangle bearing a golden sun of eight rays and three five-pointed stars - a pattern that would later be explained as deeply symbolic. The white triangle is said to echo the insignia of the <a href="/kauswagan/articles/906/about-the-katipunan" class="news_link">Katipunan</a>, the secret society that had ignited the revolution, whose own emblems often took a triangular, quasi-Masonic form. The sun's eight rays represented the first eight provinces to rise against Spanish rule - Manila, Cavite, Bulacan, Pampanga, Tarlac, Batangas, Laguna, and Nueva Ecija - while the three stars stood for the archipelago's three main island groups: Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. White was meant to signify purity and peace, blue the nation's political ideals, and red the courage and willingness of Filipino patriots to shed blood for the country.
