Early Life and Uncompromising Roots (1945–1961)

Miriam Palma Defensor was born on <time datetime="1945-06-15">June 15, 1945</time>, in the vibrant city of Iloilo. As the eldest of seven children, she learned to wield authority and shoulder heavy responsibilities long before finishing grade school. Her mother, <b>Dimpna Palma</b>, was a prominent local educator whose strict discipline and achievement-oriented worldview shaped Miriam's early environment. Her father, <b>Benjamin Defensor</b>, was an influential lawyer and trial judge.

Though the Defensor family held a high social standing, they possessed little material wealth. Until Miriam was nine years old, they lived in a modest home with a nipa (palm frond) roof. She and her neighborhood friends fashioned homemade toys from sardine cans and bottle caps, an upbringing she later recalled fondly, noting that they happily "enjoyed the luxury of filth."

Her fierce sense of justice and impatience with unfair play manifested early. While attending kindergarten at Lincoln College - where her mother served as dean - a classmate repeatedly erased Miriam's work from the blackboard. Losing her patience, young Miriam grabbed the girl's hair and wrestled her to the floor, an incident that caused her teacher to rank her sixth in her graduating class - one of the few times in her life she would ever place anywhere but first.

When her mother left Lincoln College, Miriam transferred to La Paz Public Elementary School. Lacking money for school snacks, she took turns managing the school canteen during recess; her payment was a slice of banana cake, which she considered the height of childhood luxury. Because books were too expensive to buy, Miriam became a voracious regular at the local United States Information Service (USIS) library. Her greatest childhood anxiety, she later admitted, was a fear that the world's book supply would run out before she reached middle age.

The Academic Titan and "Super Girl" at UP (1961–1969)

Miriam's intellectual dominance reached legendary status during her high school and college years. At Iloilo National High School, she won the examination to become the Editor-in-Chief of the student publication, The Ilonggo, holding the post for four straight years before graduating as class valedictorian.

In 1961, at just 16 years old, she entered the <a href="/kauswagan/articles/1188/today-in-philippine-history-june-18-1908-the-university-of-the-philippines-was-established" class="news_link">University of the Philippines</a> (UP) Visayas to study political science as a pre-law track. Finding the curriculum effortlessly simple, she rushed through the four-year program in just three and a half years, saving her final semester to study her true passion: literature. Despite a debilitating bout of amoebic dysentery that led to a severe, weeks-long clinical depression, she recovered with the help of her grandmother, took her final exams with fierce determination, and graduated magna cum laude in 1965.

She immediately transitioned to the UP College of Law in Diliman, <a href="/articles/2989/the-historical-journey-of-quezon-city" class="news_link">Quezon City</a>. While her peers struggled through dense legal texts, Miriam read her law books five times over, easily topping written examinations and shattering gender barriers on campus:

During a period of immense campus political ferment, Miriam steered a independent, moderate course with the UP Student Catholic Action. However, she actively opposed Philippine military involvement in the Vietnam War. In a midnight meeting, an anonymous source handed her classified university documents revealing that the university had leased research facilities to the Dow Chemical Company for Vietnam-related chemical weapons research.

Miriam promptly published a blistering editorial entitled "Dow is Here", which was instantly picked up by major Manila dailies. When UP President <a href="/articles/3265/the-diplomatic-brilliance-of-carlos-p-romulo" class="news_link">Carlos P. Romulo</a> pressured her to reveal her source, she resolutely refused, cementing her reputation as an unyielding defender of principles. Her dazzling campus achievements earned her the media moniker <b>"Super Girl of the UP Campus"</b>.

A Maverick in the Halls of Justice (1969–1987)

Upon graduating with a Bachelor of Laws (cum laude), Miriam declined lucrative offers from top corporate firms, choosing instead to pay back the public's investment in her education by entering government service. She became a special assistant to Justice Secretary <a href="/kauswagan/articles/2869/the-life-and-career-of-juan-ponce-enrile-a-century-of-philippine-political-evolution" class="news_link">Juan Ponce Enrile</a> and later to his successor, Vicente Abad Santos, who became her primary professional mentor.

It was during her time at UP Law that she met her husband, <b>Narciso "Chiz" Santiago Jr.</b> The two were complete opposites: Miriam was a studious honor student sitting at the front of the class, while Narciso was an easygoing student from a wealthy Luzon family who sat at the back. Despite their differences, they married in June 1970, with Senator <a href="/kauswagan/articles/778/today-in-philippine-history-november-27-1932-benigno-aquino-jr-was-born-in-concepcion-tarlac" class="news_link">Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino Jr.</a> serving as their wedding sponsor. They welcomed their first son, Narciso III, in April 1971.

Defying Martial Law
</h3>

In 1972, as rumors of an impending dictatorship swirled, Miriam was tasked with drafting a confidential memorandum for President <a href="/kauswagan/articles/595/today-in-philippine-history-september-11-1917-ferdinand-e-marcos-was-born-in-sarrat-ilocos-norte" class="news_link">Ferdinand E. Marcos</a> regarding the legality of declaring martial law. Working in isolation with three other lawyers, her conclusion was blunt: the president was advised not to declare martial law, as the domestic crises did not meet the stringent legal threshold.
