"We are just reiterating laws and regulations for a smoke-free environment,” Tolentino said.


Policemen would accompany MMDA enforcers in their rounds on Monday, he said.


Tolentino said smoking was banned on major and secondary roads, at loading and unloading bays, schools, hospitals, and other public places.


Violation of the ordinance carries a 500-peso fine for the first offense. Those who cannot afford to pay the fine must render an eight-hour community service.


The partnership in the enforcement of an intensified no-smoking policy within Metro Manila coincides with the observance of the 100-percent smoke-free environment drive and the World No-Tobacco Day celebration on June 1, according to Tolentino.


The crackdown on smoking would complement the MMDA’s drive against litterbugs, mostly violators who throw their cigarette butts on the road.
