The killing made front pages around the world within days, and one detail in the earliest wire reports has never quite let go of the Philippine imagination: that Angiolillo named the recent <a href="/kauswagan/articles/1387/today-in-philippine-history-december-30-1896-dr-jose-rizal-was-shot-in-bagumbayan" class="news_link">execution of José Rizal</a>, alongside the torture of fellow anarchists in Barcelona, as a reason for the killing. That claim deserves to be taken seriously - and also examined carefully, because the fuller record is more complicated, and more interesting, than the single-sentence version usually repeated.

<h2>
"El Monstruo": the man who built - and nearly broke - Restoration Spain
</h2>
<p>
Antonio Cánovas del Castillo was born in Málaga on <time datetime="1828-02-08">February 8, 1828</time>. Orphaned young, he made his way to Madrid, became a protégé of the general and politician Leopoldo O'Donnell, and built a career as both a historian and a statesman. By the early 1870s, with Spain cycling through a deposed queen, an assassinated prime minister, a short-lived republic, and repeated military pronunciamientos, Cánovas emerged as the chief architect of a plan to restore the Bourbon monarchy under the young Alfonso XII, achieved in <time datetime="1874-12">December 1874</time>.

He then wrote Spain's Constitution of <time datetime="1876">1876</time> and engineered the <em>turno pacífico</em>, an arrangement in which his Conservative party and the Liberal party of his rival Práxedes Mateo Sagasta would alternate peacefully in power, propped up by tightly managed elections. It gave Spain roughly two decades of relative stability after generations of upheaval, and Cánovas served as prime minister across several terms between <time datetime="1875">1875</time> and <time datetime="1897">1897</time>. A serious scholar as well as a politician - he was a member of Spain's academies of language and history - he was also famous for his political ruthlessness, which earned him the nickname <em>"El Monstruo"</em>,  "the Monster", among friend and foe alike. He distrusted universal suffrage, fearing it would open the door to socialism, and his domestic security policy leaned heavily on order and repression rather than reform.

That instinct produced two disasters that would define his final years in office. In Cuba, where a war for independence led by José Martí had reignited in <time datetime="1895">1895</time>, Cánovas refused meaningful reform and instead committed to a military solution, replacing General Arsenio Martínez Campos with General Valeriano Weyler in <time datetime="1896-02">February 1896</time>. Weyler's response - herding the rural civilian population into fortified "reconcentration" camps to cut the guerrillas off from food and support - devastated the Cuban countryside. Estimates of civilian deaths from starvation and disease in the camps range from roughly 100,000 at the low end to as many as 400,000, and the American press dubbed Weyler "the Butcher", fueling the outrage in the United States that would help drag Spain into war two years later.

At home, a bomb thrown into a religious procession in Barcelona on <time datetime="1896-06-07">June 7, 1896</time> - the Corpus Christi bombing, which killed roughly a dozen bystanders - gave Cánovas's government a pretext for a sweeping crackdown on the city's anarchist and labor movements. Some 400 suspects were rounded up and tried at Montjuïc Castle, the old military fortress overlooking Barcelona; of these, 87 were formally tried and five executed. Credible, widely circulated reports described torture used to extract confessions - broken bones, torn-out fingernails, prolonged submersion in water - and the Montjuïc trial became an international scandal, denounced in the European press and by anarchist and labor organizations across the continent. It made Cánovas, personally, a marked man among anarchists everywhere.

An Italian anarchist's road to Santa Águeda
</h2>

Michele Angiolillo Lombardi was born on <time datetime="1871-06-05">June 5, 1871</time>, in Foggia, in southern Italy, and trained as a typographer - a trade that put him in close contact with the radical presses of the European anarchist movement. Details of his early life are sparse, but by the mid-1890s he was living in London, then a hub for anarchist exiles from across Europe, including Spaniards who had fled or survived the Montjuïc repression. Their firsthand accounts of the torture apparently affected him deeply.

In <time datetime="1897">1897</time> Angiolillo left England, traveling through Marseille into Spain under a false identity, carrying a revolver and, by some accounts, a small quantity of dynamite. In Paris he met Ramón Emeterio Betances, the exiled Puerto Rican independence leader then serving as a representative of Cuban separatist interests in France; Betances reportedly gave him money but discouraged violence. Angiolillo also met the French journalist Henri Rochefort, whose newspaper had campaigned loudly against the Montjuïc torture. In Madrid, using the alias "Emilio Rinaldini" and posing as a journalist, he sought help from the Spanish writer José Nakens. As he was leaving, Angiolillo told Nakens of his plan to strike at the queen regent, María Cristina; at the prime minister; and even at the boy-king, Alfonso XIII, then eleven years old. Nakens didn't believe he was serious - though he later said that even if he had, he would not have intervened, since he considered it "a political crime," not his business to prevent.

Sunday at the spa: the assassination in detail
</h2>

By <time datetime="1897-08">August 1897</time>, Cánovas - nearly 70, and worn down by the strain of the Cuban war - had gone with his wife to take the waters at the Santa Águeda spa, a small resort near Mondragón, in the Basque province of Guipúzcoa, not far from the fashionable summer retreat of San Sebastián. It was meant to be a rest from the pressures of Madrid.

Angiolillo had followed him there, again presenting himself as a journalist seeking an interview - a pretext that got him close. Around noon on Sunday, August 8, he found the prime minister sitting alone on a bench, absorbed in a newspaper; his security detail, by most accounts, had let its guard down. Angiolillo drew a British Bulldog revolver and fired three shots at close range. Cánovas died almost immediately.

His wife rushed to his side and, according to multiple contemporary accounts, turned on the killer, calling him a murderer. Angiolillo made no attempt to flee. He is reported to have bowed to her, telling her that he bore her no ill will personally but felt no remorse, since - as he put it in substance - he had settled a debt owed to his comrades who had suffered at Montjuïc. He was arrested on the spot without resistance.
