<p>
Austin Craig was educated at the Cornell University (Bachelor of Laws, 1894), Rochester University (Master of Arts, 1911).  In 1929, Criag was awarded an honorary Doctor of Letters degree from the Pacific University. 
</p>

<p>
Professor Craig began his long and distinguished career as an educator as superintendent of schools, Washington County, Oregon, 1895-1898. He was admitted to the Oregon bar in 1898 and  practiced in the federal courts in 1899 but soon forsook the law to return to the educational field, in which,  he has made his influence felt in a constructive way in the development of cultural standards in the Philippines. 
</p>

<p>
Entering the Philippine Civil Service by examination in 1904, Professor Craig, a <a href="https://kahimyang.com/kauswagan/articles/2762/today-in-philippine-history-august-21-1901-the-thomasites-arrived-to-establish-a-new-public-school-system-switching-to-english-from-spanish" class="news_link">Thomasite</a> who arrived later in Manila on July 25, 1904, subsequently served as:
</p>
 
<ul>
<li>
Supervising teacher, division superintendent of schools and principal of the academic department, Philippine School of Arts and Trades, up to 1908;
</li>
<li>
Was instructor in history, Philippine Normal and Manila High schools, 1909-1912; 
</li>
<li>
Organized the social science departments in the new University of the Philippines and was assistant professor, associate professor, head professor and Rizal Research professor at the University, 1912-1922; 
</li>
<li>
Professor of history, University of Manila, 1922-1927; 
</li>
<li>
Research work, 1927-1930, and since May of 1930  has again served as Rizal Research professor of history, University of the Philippines. 
</li>

<li>
Chairman of the commission for inauguration of the Rizal National Park, Dapitan, Mindanao, 1911;
</li>
<li> Chairman commission on transfer of Dr. Rizal's ashes to Rizal Mausoleum, December, 1912, and member national commission on identification of bones of General Gregorio H. del Pilar, 1930;
</li>
</ul>
<p>
Professor Craig authored, co-authored, edited serveral books and articles about the life and works of Dr. Jose Rizal, and about Philippine history.
</p>
<p>
Austin Craig's early works on Dr. Jose Rizal include the 56-page book,  "The Greatest Man of the Brown Race"; followed by a second bigger volume of 300 pages, entitled "Jose Rizal and his Writings"; and his "Lineage, Life and Labors of Jose Rizal", regarded as one of the most comprehensive biographies of Rizal.

<p>
Craig returned to his home country in the 30s and lived with his wife Josephine in Minneapolis.  It is not known if he remarried after the death of Josephine in 1938.  
</p>

<p>
Professor Craig died on February 11, 1949 in  Minneapolis, Minnesota, with his Rizal scholarship as legacy.  Craig also had a distinction of having a street named after him while he was still alive, the Craig street in Sampaloc, Manila, one of several streets in the district named after characters, personages, and places pertaining to the life and works of Jose Rizal.
