Marcos run against the US State Department in the 1986 Snap election

(This article appeared in the January 10, 1986 issue of Executive Intelligence Review)

The 1986 "snap" election in the Philippines was not a political battle between President Ferdinand Marcos and the opposition ticket headed by the political neophyte Corazon "Cory" Aquino. In reality, it was a major contest between the "New Yalta" forces of the U.S. Department of State and the sovereignty of the Republic of the Philippines-and by implication, all U.S. allies. The real opposition to the Marcos - Tolentino slate was located in Washington, D.C., not in the Philippines.
