Growing up as the daughter of Dr. Salvador Estrada and Demetria Reynada, Eva was expected to focus purely on her studies. When she entered the University of the Philippines (UP) during the Commonwealth era, it was a daring move - many traditional Catholic girls' schools back then actively discouraged enrolling there, viewing UP as overly secular.


She quickly became a campus icon, serving as a regimental and corps sponsor. But it was her choice of physical education that changed her life: competitive sharp-shooting. On the shooting range, she could out-shoot Olympic-level marksmen in rapid-fire categories. The only person she couldn't beat was Teodoro "Teddy" Kalaw Jr. Because of a playful bet where the loser had to bake for the winner, she spent her courtship baking cakes for him.


Marrying into the Kalaw family thrust her into a legendary lineage of Filipino intellectuals and advocates. Her father-in-law, Teodoro Kalaw Sr., was a fierce nationalist writer and director of the National Library. Her mother-in-law, Pura Villanueva Kalaw, was the nation's premier champion for women's suffrage (the right to vote). Once, seeing Eva darning her husband's socks, Pura Free-spiritedly asked, "Is that what you went to college for? To darn your husband's socks?" This push launched Eva into civic work, leading the Philippine Jayceerettes and organizing social welfare programs.

The Legislative Legacy: Champion of Education and Welfare

When Eva ran for the Senate in 1965 under the Nacionalista Party, she was largely seen as a token female candidate. She stunned the political establishment by landing fifth in the overall race.


Once in office, she refused to act as a rubber stamp for the party. She authored foundational laws that reshaped Philippine society, focusing heavily on education and social safety nets:

Standing Up to Marcos and the Plaza Miranda Bombing

Her rift with President Ferdinand Marcos began early. At the height of the Vietnam War in the late 1960s, she openly opposed Marcos's plan to send Filipino troops (via the Philippine Civic Action Group, or PHILCAG) to join the conflict. It was a shocking display of independence within the ruling party.


By 1971, knowing the Nacionalista Party would drop her for her criticisms, she accepted an invitation from her cousin, Liberal Party Senator Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino Jr., to run as a guest candidate for the opposition.


On August 21, 1971, during the Liberal Party's campaign rally at Plaza Miranda in Manila, unidentified attackers threw two hand grenades onto the stage. The blast killed nine people and severely wounded the leadership of the opposition. Eva survived but carried shrapnel in her body for the rest of her life. The tragedy solidified her anti-authoritarian stance. On election day, she won a historic second term - the first woman senator ever to be reelected.
