Born on June 10, 1935, in Paniqui, Tarlac, Eduardo Jr. belonged to one of the country's most powerful land-owning clans. His heritage was a unique mix: his father, Eduardo Sr., was of Chinese descent, while his mother, Josephine Murphy, was the daughter of an Irish-Canadian U.S. Army volunteer.
