Angelita Albano Castro was born on <time datetime="1942-08-26">August 26, 1942</time>, in Jones, Isabela, Philippines. She was the youngest of six children born to <b>Eufemia Albano</b>, a pharmacist, and <b>Dr. Miguel Castro</b>. Her father was a physician and a Captain in the United States Army Forces in the Far East (USAFFE), who was tragically killed during World War II when Angelita was just an infant.

Raised by her widowed mother in <a href="/articles/3081/sampaloc-manila-from-tamarind-trees-to-university-hub" class="news_link">Sampaloc, Manila</a>, Angelita was highly competitive from a young age. She anchored student organizations, cleared out regional quiz bees, and dominated school debates. In 1962, at just 20 years old, she graduated <b>Summa Cum Laude</b> from the <a href="/articles/3223/a-historical-account-of-the-university-of-santo-tomas" class="news_link">University of Santo Tomas</a> (UST) with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and Physics.
