On August 10, 1519, Ferdinand Magellan (Fernão de Magalhães), the Portuguese explorer sailing under the Spanish crown, embarked on one of history's most momentous voyages. Leading a fleet of five ships carrying approximately 270 men, Magellan departed from Seville down the Guadalquivir River, beginning what would become the first circumnavigation of the globe.
