The attacks, the bloodiest of five coup attempts against the government, posed the most serious threat to Aquino in her 18 months in power.

Soldiers loyal to the president repulsed the rebel attack on <a href="https://kahimyang.com/kauswagan/articles/2851/history-of-malaca-ang-palace-the-official-residence-and-principal-workplace-of-the-president-of-the-philippines" class="news_link">Malacañang</a> Palace after heavy fighting with many military and civilian casualties. Aquino's son, the future President Benigno Aquino III, 
 was wounded.

Another group of about 300 rebel soldiers led by Colonel Gregorio Honasan himself, succeeded in seizing control of part of the sprawling Camp Aguinaldo in Quezon City. By late morning the rebels consolidated their control in part of the camp. The camp houses the Defense Department and general armed forces headquarters.

Armed forces spokesman Colonel Honesto Isleta said the rebel soldiers had been allowed to enter Camp Aquinaldo in an effort to avoid a bloody battle in streets.
</p>

Shortly after noon, pro-Aquino soldiers defending the government's television and radio complex surrendered to rebel troops. Manila police commander Brigadier General <a href="https://kahimyang.com/kauswagan/articles/2564/today-in-philippine-history-august-8-2020-alfredo-lim-died-due-to-complications-brought-about-by-covid-19" class="news_link">Alfredo Lim</a>, who arrived at the station as the soldiers began surrendering, was taken hostage by the rebel forces, radio station DZRH reported from the scene.

Surrendering soldiers interviewed by the radio said they gave up because they had not received reinforcements or supplies since they arrived at the station 12 hours earlier.

By noon, the rebels had seized control of a private television station in Quezon City and the Air Force headquarters building at Villamor Air Base. The air base houses the government's helicopter fleet, and loss of the base would mean the government would be without air support.

US President Reagan, in a statement from Los Angeles, California, said he was "profoundly concerned" about the reports coming out of the Philippines:

"The United States condemns this attempt at extra-constitutional action. I wish to make absolutely clear America's unqualified support of President Aquino."

Armed forces chief General <a href="https://kahimyang.com/kauswagan/articles/1022/today-in-philippine-history-on-march-18-1928-fidel-ramos-was-born-in-lingayen-pangasinan" class="news_link">Fidel Ramos</a>, in a radio broadcast on DZRH late in the morning, ordered all military commanders in the field to "be prepared to support Camp Aquinaldo with combat troops. Do not believe rebel propaganda that the command has fallen or has been taken over." Ramos said 800 troops were involved in the coup attempt.

Rebel soldiers, broadcasting from the seized television station, Channel 13, said:

"We expect to have the entire country under control by the end of the day."

The mutinous officers are proteges of Enrile and are said to be fiercely loyal to him. When Enrile was ousted as defense minister, the rebel officers were sent to posts outside Manila. Enrile has not surfaced since the start of the coup attempt. These same officers led the revolt that forced former president <a href="https://kahimyang.com/kauswagan/articles/595/today-in-philippine-history-september-11-1917-ferdinand-e-marcos-was-born-in-sarrat-ilocos-norte" class="news_link">Ferdinand E. Marcos</a> into exile and brought Aquino to power.

In a statement broadcast on private radio station DZRH, the rebel soldiers described themselves as "idealistic, young officers who have taken it upon themselves to initiate the fight for justice, equality and freedom which our senior officers failed to do or refused to undertake."
</p>
<p>
Ramos, in an earlier radio broadcast, said rebel troops loyal Marcos were involved in the coup attempt.
</p>

United Press International, interviewing Marcos at his Honolulu home, said he denied that he was involved in the coup attempt. Marcos said:

"The disregard of human rights and senseless killing has brought this disappointment and frustration to a point where probably there may be riots. Probably that is what we are seeing now."

Marcos told Cable News Network that:

"I promised the American government I would have nothing to do with destabilization attempts ... I intend to implement that promise."

Rebel soldiers also seized a regional military camp in Pampanga province, about 80 kilometers north of Manila, a diplomatic source said. The source said there were reports of fighting outside Camp Olivas in San Fernando, the Pampanga capital.
