On , Ferdinand Johann Franz Blumentritt was born in Prague, then the seat of the Kingdom of Bohemia within the Austrian Empire, to Ferdinand Matthaeus Johann Blumentritt and Amalia Ecatherina Schneider. He would grow up to become, by profession, a provincial schoolteacher in a small Bohemian town nobody in the Philippines had heard of - and, by devotion, one of the most important European voices ever to speak in defense of the Filipino people, without setting foot in the archipelago even once.
