A teacher's curiosity about a country he would never see

Blumentritt studied history at Prague University before settling into a career as an educator in Leitmeritz (today Litoměřice, in the Czech Republic), a river town on the Elbe. He taught geography and history at the town's municipal secondary school, eventually rising to serve as its director - an unremarkable academic post for a man whose real passion lay eight thousand miles away.

Sometime in the late 1870s, Blumentritt developed an intense scholarly fascination with the Philippines - its peoples, its languages, its pre-colonial past - despite having no personal connection to the islands. Working from Spanish colonial reports, missionary accounts, and travelers' writings, he began publishing a steady stream of articles and monographs: on the archipelago's ethnic groups, on Chinese communities in Manila, on Muslim Mindanao, on the vocabulary particular to Philippine Spanish. His major early work, <em>Versuch einer Ethnographie der Philippinen</em> (An Attempt at an Ethnography of the Philippines), published in Gotha in <time datetime="1882">1882</time>, catalogued dozens of Philippine ethnolinguistic groups in a level of systematic detail no other European scholar had attempted. Rizal's biographer León María Guerrero would later credit Blumentritt as the Philippines' first serious historian of the 19th century - an extraordinary distinction for a man who studied the country entirely from a desk in Bohemia.

"Esteemed Sir" to "Dear Brother": the correspondence begins
</h2>

In <time datetime="1886-07">July 1886</time>, a 25-year-old Filipino medical student in Germany came across Blumentritt's published work and was struck by the sheer improbability of it: a European scholar who had chosen the Philippines as a serious subject of study, not as a colonial curiosity, but as a people and civilization worth understanding. <a href="/kauswagan/articles/1190/today-in-philippine-history-june-19-1861-dr-jose-p-rizal-was-born-in-calamba-laguna" class="news_link">José Rizal</a> wrote to Blumentritt in German - a language he was still learning, used deliberately as a gesture of respect - enclosing a Tagalog-Spanish arithmetic textbook, since he had heard the Austrian was teaching himself Tagalog. Blumentritt wrote back within weeks, delighted, and reciprocated with two books of his own.

What began as an exchange between a curious scholar and an admiring reader grew, over the next ten years, into a correspondence of more than two hundred letters - in German, Spanish, and occasionally English - covering Philippine ethnography and linguistics, European politics, natural science, and the increasingly urgent question of colonial reform. Historians who have studied the letters have traced the changing tone of the friendship through its salutations alone: "Esteemed Sir" in the earliest exchanges, "Esteemed Friend" within five months, "Dear Friend" after the two men finally met in <time datetime="1887">1887</time>, and, from late <time datetime="1889">1889</time> onward, "Dear Brother" - the form both used until Rizal's death.

Four days in Leitmeritz
</h2>

In the spring of <time datetime="1887">1887</time>, Rizal was preparing to return home after five years in Europe, where he had just finished writing - and, with money borrowed from his friend <a href="/kauswagan/articles/691/today-in-philippine-history-october-17-1857-maximo-viola-was-born" class="news_link">Máximo Viola</a>, printing - his first novel, <a href="/articles/3266/jose-rizals-noli-me-tangere-a-novel-that-awakened-a-nation" class="news_link"><em>Noli Me Tángere</em></a>. Before sailing back to the Philippines, he built an extended tour of the continent into his itinerary - Prague, Vienna, Stuttgart, Munich, Geneva, Rome - arranged so that it would pass through Leitmeritz. Accompanied by Viola, Rizal arrived on <time datetime="1887-05-14">May 14, 1887</time>, and was met at the train station by Blumentritt, who had brought his whole family and booked the two travelers rooms at the Hotel Krebs.

It was the only time the two men ever saw each other face to face. Over four days, Blumentritt showed his guests around the town and introduced them to friends and colleagues, and by every account the two got along as though they had known each other for years rather than months of letters. Litoměřice today maintains a formal twin-city relationship with both Calamba, Rizal's birthplace, and Dapitan, where he spent four years in exile - in recognition of that one brief visit.

Literary collaborator and moral compass

Blumentritt's role in Rizal's life went well beyond friendship. He translated a chapter of <em>Noli Me Tángere</em> into German to help introduce the novel to European readers, and years later, when Rizal prepared his annotated edition of Antonio de Morga's 17th-century <a href="/kauswagan/articles/1089/antonio-de-morgas-report-of-conditions-in-the-philippines-on-june-8-1598" class="news_link"><em>Sucesos de las Islas Filipinas</em></a> - a project meant to prove the pre-colonial Philippines already had a civilization worth respecting - it was Blumentritt he asked to write the prologue, instructing him plainly to critique the work as if the two men were strangers. Blumentritt did exactly that, gently taking issue with places where he felt Rizal judged the Spanish past too harshly by the standards of the present.

When Rizal finished his second novel, <a href="/kauswagan/articles/1276/today-in-philippine-history-september-18-1891-dr-jose-rizals-el-filibusterismo-was-published-in-ghent-belgium" class="news_link"><em>El Filibusterismo</em></a>, in <time datetime="1891">1891</time>, Blumentritt actually opposed its publication - he feared, correctly, that it would put Rizal's life in danger. Rizal published it anyway and asked his friend to write an inscription for the title page regardless. Rizal also turned to Blumentritt to explain a word most Europeans didn't understand: <em>filibustero</em>, the label Spanish authorities pinned on anyone suspected of harboring revolutionary sympathies - a word Rizal said he first heard as a child in <time datetime="1872">1872</time>, the year <a href="/kauswagan/articles/937/today-in-philippine-history-february-17-1872-fathers-mariano-gomez-jose-apolonio-burgos-and-jacinto-zamora-were-executed" class="news_link">three Filipino priests were executed</a> on charges of instigating a mutiny in Cavite. That explanation became the intellectual seed of the novel's title.
